Belgium is the strangest country in the world

“If I grew up on a farm, and was retarded, Bruges might impress me but I didn’t, so it doesn’t.”

That’s how Colin Farrell described Bruges – or as he generally referred to it: “fucking Bruges” – In the 2008 film titled, strangely enough, In Bruges. Although Colin Farrell was only referring to one city, perhaps the same thing could be said about Belgium as a whole. Belgium is a strange and often forgotten little country which is famous mostly for unleashing Jean-Claude Van Damme onto the world and not much else. Sure they have waffles, chocolates and Tintin but really, what else is there?

Image

There’s these

Whenever anybody says that they are going to Belgium, the standard response is generally “why?”. this may be because, according to some people, Belgium isn’t even a “real country”. It may also be because Belgium is a strange little country caught in-between neighbours that are far more interesting. Who in their right mind would go to Belgium when France, Germany, the UK and even the Netherlands are right there?

Image

Pictured: not a real country

1 – The most boring place in the world

According to pretty much everybody, Belgium is a boring place. Even the Belgians agree and according to a recent survey, 60% of Belgians wish that they were born somewhere else.

Jeremy Clarkson – aka the mean one from Top Gear – did a (hilarious) documentary a few years back where he travelled to the UK’s neighbouring countries and took the piss out of them. In one episode Jeremy wanders the streets asking the locals whether they were glad to be born Belgian. He is absolutely shocked when after interviewing many people, he finds just one guy who is happy being Belgian. Even the guy dressed as a penguin preferred his status as a penguin to that of being Belgian.

Better than being Belgian

Better than being Belgian

Many countries are famous for having a national sport. Brazil is known for soccer, the Spanish are renowned for acting stupidly around bulls, and France is known for surrendering to the Germans. While Belgium doesn’t necessarily have a “national sport” they do really have some strange ones. If you believe Jeremy Clarkson, a typical Saturday in Belgium, usually involves a game which he calls “shit yourself rich”. This sport involves dividing a field up into an imaginary grid and everybody betting on where the cow will “have its first shit”. Don’t believe me? Watch the video below if you want a laugh.

2 – The culinary delights

If we learned anything from Pulp Fiction it taught us a really good place to hide a watch, and that they do things differently in Europe. In one scene, John Travolta is sitting in a car telling Samuel L Jackson all about a “Royale with cheese” and the metric system.

Vincent: You know what they put on French fries in Holland instead of  ketchup?

Jules: What?

Vincent: Mayonnaise.

Jules: Goddamn.

Vincent: I’ve seen em do it, man. They fuckin’ drown em in that shit.

What John Travolta/Vincent neglected to mention, is that the Belgians also love to drown their chips in Mayonnaise, in fact they practically invented it. Belgian chip kiosks often come with a wall of mayonnaise and sauce dispensers. After ordering your chips, which is simple enough, you are then expected to submerge your lunch under your choice of mayonnaise.

Would you like fries with that?

Would you like fries with that?

In fact fried potatoes are so popular in Belgium that it is considered their national dish. Moules-frites or mussels and fries may seem like a strange combination, but you try telling that to a Belgian.

They also eat this, whatever it's supposed to be

They also eat this, whatever it’s supposed to be

Belgium is also world famous for its strange and often highly alcoholic beers. Every town seems to have its own brewery (or several) and a surprisingly large number of these are brewed by monks who have taken a vow of silence, however in true Belgian style, the weirdness does not stop there. What is more strange than a bunch of religious guys silently making beer, is the names they give those beers. Of course there is the famous Hoegaarden, which in English sounds like…well..you know. There are also others such as: Duvel (which means devil), Judas, Satan, Silly, Dulle Teve (which means mad bitch) and Delerium Tremens (which is what you will get from drinking too many of these) just to name a few.

3 – They hate themselves

Belgium has a total of three official languages, which for a country of around 11 million people is a real achievement  It is also an excellent way of making sure that nobody gets along. The northern half all speak Flemish (not phlegm-ish) which is just a fancy way of saying Dutch, while the bottom half speak French and a very small part of the population speaks German. To complicate things further, the capital Brussels and the region surrounding it is bilingual in Dutch and French, which means that all of the street signs must be in both languages. This may seem like it makes perfect sense, but often it results in some rather nonsensical repetition of words that are the same in both languages.

Gee I'm glad they translated that

Gee I’m glad they translated that

While the bilingual (or trilingual) thing may not initially seem like an issue, you can trust the Belgians to make it one. It seems that the French and Dutch hate each other so much – and everybody hates the Germans – that nobody can agree on anything. Since the Belgians can’t even decide on what to name a street, it’s not that surprising really that they can’t decide on a government either. The country currently holds the world record for not having a government. Which brings me to…

4 – Their government (or lack of it)

On February 17 in 2011, Belgium broke the world record for having no government (well really it was for going the longest period of time without having a new government voted in after an election). The country’s different language groups just can’t seem to get along about anything. After an election in 2010, the Belgians did what they were best at and disagreed to the point where no government could be formed. This carried on for some time, but after 249 days without a government, the Belgian people decided enough was enough and marched into the streets to spark a revolution.

Generally, when countries stage revolutions, they can often turn out to be violent and bloody. People march into the streets – or onto Twitter – and demand change. However in Belgium’s case – as with everything they do – their revolution was a little, well, different.

People-in-Ghent-strip-off-007

The Belgians held a ceremony, to celebrate eight government-free months and the handing over of the world record from the previous record holders, the Iraqis, to the Belgians. Now, before you accuse the Belgians of not taking this situation seriously, you should realise that more drastic steps were taken. On the same night, began the “Fries Revolution”. Belgians marched into the streets and angrily ate fries to protest their lack of government.

Surprisingly, this “revolution” did not have the desired result of  ending the political stalemate and forming a new government. Which is odd really, because what better way is there to say “we are angry” than to march into the streets and eat chips? In fact it wasn’t until much later that that actually happened.

Feel my wrath

I am angry!

It wasn’t until a full 541 days of negotiations that a new government was finally elected. And the person that they finally elected  to run the country could  barely even speak Dutch! Which shouldn’t really matter as it’s only spoken by around 60% of the population.

5 – The monuments

Some countries are so famous for their monuments that you can’t mentally the place from the landmark. Who could imagine France without the Eiffel Tower coming to mind, or Egypt without the pyramids? Belgium however is not one of those countries.

Perhaps Belgium’s most famous “monument” (I use that term lightly) is the pint-sized fountain Manneken Pis. Some of you out there who (like me) are particularly immature would look at the name and say something intelligent, along the lines of: “Haha, it has the word piss in it”. Well, if you laughed at the name of the statue, don’t feel alone, the city of Brussels – the country’s CAPITAL – is laughing along with you.

Haha, he is weeing

That’s right, Manneken Pis is a statue of a little boy pissing. Before you think that this is some random statue in an out of the way corner of the city, think again. Manneken Pis, the little boy pissing into a fountain, is actually the symbol of Brussels. In addition to this insanity, the residents of Brussels regularly dress up little Manneken to celebrate special occasions and there is even a museum that houses over 800 of his outfits.

Following in this proud tradition, Brussels also recently introduced a female counterpart to Manneken Pis: Jeanekke Pis. This statue of a little girl squatting was erected in 1987 and, like her male counterpart, little Jeanekke is also a functioning fountain which “urinates” water with a look of apparent joy, literally etched onto her face.

Grow up belgium

Grow up Belgium

Another weird monument can be found in Antwerp, the Flemish capital of Belgium. Antwerp’s main square boats a large statue of a man named Brabo cutting off a giant’s hand. Of course, as it is apparently compulsory in Belgium, the statue is a fountain and water gushes out of the giant’s severed hand as if it was created by Quentin Tarantino. In fact, this statue is so central to Antwerp’s identiy as a city that many believe that this is how the city got its name. The Dutch name for the city: Antwerpen, apparently comes from the combination of the words “hand” and “werpen” meaning “hand throw”.

Let's name our city after this

Let’s name our city after this

I could go on forever about the weird and wonderful monuments in this crazy little county but I will try to wrap this up. Other cities too boast strange monuments, such as Ghent’s cannon with a stuffed toy inside, Bruges with its mysterious upside-down cannon and and Brussels’ Atomium which is is an indescribable large silver monument of sticks and balls.

Atomium

Concluding comments.

Before I finish, I would just like to ask you the reader a quick question. Without checking Wikipedia, do you know what Belgium’s national anthem is? The answer is La Brabançonne. If you couldn’t answer that don’t worry you’re not alone. The former Belgian prime minister doesn’t know the national anthem either.

If anybody ever made a film documenting the history of Belgium, it would have to be narrated by Inspector Clouseau.

Did this article make you angry? Then you should read “Belgium, the country that can’t take a joke”.

sure, try that in Germany, they’ll get angry again and start another war, again. If we indeed come across that man he’ll get to know the gutter in Brussels much better than he’d ever thought he would. Though it’ll probably be by feeling and hearing alone, since both of his eyes will be slammed shut 🙂

its boring and they wont admit it that its only good for one reason, to get drunk, FUCK FUCK FUCK chubby girls, the girls even like FUCKING together with one guy, i love that

          Facts,
-Brussels girls are depressed closed minded miserable people who cant even get along by themselves, for example girls walk around with their heads down, they need to get drunk and pretend anyone even hinting to return to the Hotel room is indecent, then once you stalking leaving the bar they actually fallow you and have sex any where if they did not give you a BJ or R-job in the bathroom already, yes i sad Rim Job., because most guys in BELGIUM are gay the girls are available even for 65 year olds., and you will think some are with their fathers until you see them giving head in a car or even at a cafe under the table.

-More divorces then america, in fact i had the impression it was americans in BELGIUM who had divorces all the time but with that crappy weather what did you expect but people trying to stay warm with anyone else, of did i mention the try- or tri-sexuals, most guys there try anything, Brussels is full of perverts.

-Immigrants who drive taxis, they claim they dont know where you want to go and charge you anyway.

          – The Muslims in Brussels are convinced they can turn it into islam, why this country of all countries is beyond me, maybe its because most guys there are lost already and anything can guide them, especially non alcoholic Muslims with healthy genes, i would not be surprised if Belg girls use Muslims to get pregnant and and leave them, sad but its like that there, guys are duds.

-Ill bring it up again, THE WEATHER and HYPOCRISY are so alike the posts here prove it, and the only reason any of these people have the nerve to abuse themselves denying how BORING brussels is are in groups at a bar or on the internet here obviously, face to face one on one is not going to work you see, its impossible to win a argument when your in denial of facts.

so there are the facts, fuck the girls and run if any of them decide to keep the kids

          Let’s talk abpit Australia…

Racist people insulting tourists because english native speaker can’t speak an other language. A country made on genocide of real Australian, steeling their home. I’m proud becaise our country is close the the situation of Israël. The only difference, even if we didn’t had a gouvernement for while, even if we have tension, we never eally fight each other. Actually what the guy describe is a stupid and caricatural picture of the country. Just don’t come to Belgium if you don’t like it but please stop complaining. I have a sens of humour but I don’t like being insulted or hearing that my culture is poor and stupid. Because at leqst I have a culture, an history, not like american or Australian. New Zealand is different. But please don’t come to Belgium if its so sad for you go back crying in Australia.

        • Paul / Jul 20 2014 6:52 pm

First, the article is biased and inaccurate. Belgium is a magnificent country, it may have its issues like any other nation, but still a great place to live. Every country has its pros and cons.

Second, Muslims are not a particular problem to Belgium, but to Europe as whole. Muslims will always try to shove their religion down your throat no matter what. If you want peace in Europe, you would have to push the Muslims out of it, these folks are not easy to get along with.

I indeed hate belgium( beacues of the weather) , but is same pedophillic as autres countries, backwards not realy and for sure not racist (74% of brux are emigrants). Im living in Belgium for half a year now and I have never been more depressed in my whole life.Living in a small city where the peak of the week is the saturday market, 3 stands with vegetables and bags and lasts for 2 hours. The Belgian people dress for it like they are going to a gala event.. it s no wonder people start doing drugs and drinks galons of alcohol just not to be bored to death. Went to the Belgian high class coast once, and never again..looks like the scene in the movie ‘The Road’, like the earth is dying, all grey, no green what-so-ever and almost was gone with the wind..every time i try to think where to go in the week-end, I almost start crying, cuz there s NOWHERE to go, nbothing to see. Bruges was kinda nice lets say, but for me that s the only thing..

PS: The answer is definitely Brussels…

Antwerp is the capital of the Flanders, it’s as simple as that just like Turnhout is the capital of “De Kempen” ….
Namen being the capital of the French side…
        Do your research first.

What is wrong with all of you? Flanders doesn’t have a capital neither does Wallonia! It’s all one country with Brussels as the capital, thanks.

        • Modep / Jun 25 2013 10:37 pm

I see a lot of different answers from Belgian people, who seem to be unsure about it. How about you guys figure it out for yourself. And is it really important for the piece to have the name of the capital right? Not really… since the belgians are always whining about partition of Flanders from the French part, it might not even be a country anymore!

      • Bjorn / Apr 18 2013 2:55 pm

OK, to end this stupid discussion. Flanders doesn’t have a capital! A land or province can have a capital, but not Flanders…
        Antwerp -> Antwerp
        East-Flanders -> Ghent
        West-Flanders -> Bruges

        Etc… etc…

      • Annejoke / Apr 18 2013 6:45 pm

Brussels is the capital of Flandres. The problem is, they speak hardly any flemmish in Brussels, most people there speak french.
Antwerp is more like the capital of the flemmish community.

        • Thosewhothinktheyknowareanannoyancetothosewhodoknow / Apr 25 2013 2:51 am

WELL THAT’S WHAT ANTWERP SAYS. And nobody cares.

      • laliberte2016 / Dec 30 2016 11:15 am

No Ghent is the capital of Flandres (the Dutch speaking part) and brussel is the one of Belgium.

        • Tim Suetens / Dec 30 2016 11:37 am

You are all wrong. I live in Belgium (near Antwerp), so I should know. Brussels is the capital of our country, and that’s it. Flanders and Wallonia are merely regions. Flanders’ capital is still Brussels. The capital of Wallonia is Namur (“Namen” in Dutch).

    • Anna / Apr 18 2013 4:26 pm

Brussels isn’t even part of Flanders (it is itself a region), but the Flemish institutions are located in Brussels. It seems that Brussels is the capital of the “Flemish Community” – as opposed to the region – though… This all just makes Belgium even stranger!

      • MissRed (@phylomiss) / May 15 2013 3:51 am

Man you people ain’t got much knowledge about Belgium, eh? Brussels IS historically a part of Flanders, the only problem is that by now more people here speak French – and so the endless Belgian discussion “should Brussels be part of the Wallonie or not” arose and keeps on going until (most likely) the end of time.

Antwerp is definitely NOT the capital. Brussels is the capital. Are you people too lazy to actually type the word “Belgium” into wikipedia?

Honestly, if you don’t know what you’re talking about – just shut up

        • Modep / Jun 25 2013 10:39 pm

Does it matter? Not really. The piece is not really about geography or history, so stop whining.

        • Philip Merrin / Mar 25 2014 7:24 pm

Brussels has never been part of Province Flanders, it was part of Province Brabant before federalisation. Now Brussels is a self administering national capital of Belgium and bi-lingual. There are two other regions, The Wallonia region which is french speaking and holds their regional parliamentary sittings in Namur south east of Brussels. The other more populous region is Flanders which incorporates four provinces: East Flanders, West Flanders, Antwerp & Limburg. The Flanders region government does in fact sit outside of it’s region in Brussels as well as the National government. The reason for this is historical. For centuries Brussels went through a process of Frenchification despite it traditionally being Dutch speaking.

The big argument in Belgium is regarding language. For many years during French rule and also for the first hundred years of Belgian being a sovereign country the ruling elite promoted French as the country’s national language, even relegating Dutch to peasant status. If you wanted to get ahead you had to learn French and many Dutch speaking families did just that and then when most people spoke French in Brussels they dropped speaking Dutch at home. This was not by choice but necessity.

Now that Flemish/Dutch has equal status and 60% of the country speaks this language, the boots on the other foot and the memory of how the French speakers and to be fair some Flemish families to try to kill off the Dutch language, has given the Northern half of Belgium it’s voice, particularly as it’s also become the more prosperous community in the past 50 years or so.

So Brussels because of it’s Flemish heritage is the seat for both the national and flemish governments. Brussels is the biggest city in Belgium and Antwerp located in Flandria is the second largest and the countries largest port. The largest city in French speaking Wallonia is Liege, located near the German border and Luxemburg.

Sorry for the essay, but it is kind of complicated.

    • Jerreke / Apr 18 2013 4:44 pm

Antwerp is the capital of Flanders?!? And the rest is parking right? :-). Before saying that people need to do research first, it’s better to make sure not to say stupid stuff yourself cause it really is Brussels!!!

  7. Kyliebling / Apr 17 2013 8:25 pm

What a load of horse manure.. Before you attempt to write an ‘amusing’ piece on a country you’ve obviously never visited before in your life, you might at least TRY to get some of your facts straight instead of just copying them from wikipedia or pulling them from your ass, since i’m sure that was your greatest source of information. I’m telling you this because, if you don’t check your facts, you end up sounding like a hateful little retard (see supra). (1) Belgium IS a real country. Why the fuck would you even question that.
    (2) When writing in English, do mind your spelling. I’m referring to where you wrote about ‘the Nederlands’ being more intersting than Belgium, but you will find that it is actually ‘the Netherlands’. There.
    (3) Whether or not you find Belgium boring is of course entirely up to you. I myself just find it a little daft to generalize on the basis of Jeremy Clarson, a dude famous for liking cars, like, a lot, randomly asking a few people if they would have rather been born someplace else – among whom was a person who dresses up as a bloody penguin for a living and MUST therefore hate himeself and everybody else on the entire planet … Great reference! I’m betting that if you asked someone in, say, Bagdad if they had rather been born somewhere else, you’d probably get an equally positive response but i wouldn’t go so far as to think that it was because they thought their country was the ‘most boring place on Earth’. What? War in the Middle East? Saddam Hussein? Pff, YAWN… Yeah.
    (4) Fighting a war is not a national sport and FOR FUCK’S SAKE, France NEVER, like EVER, surrendered to Germany!! Are you mentally challenged or just horribly misinformed?!I hope you yourself are not from a European country because, Christ Alfuckingmighty, that would be extremely embarassing…
    (5) ‘Koetje Kak’, or ‘shit yourself rich’ as world renouned historian Jeremy Clarkson called it, is not really a sport per sé, it was more of a thing to do whilst waiting for television and the Internet to be invented.. And fyi, Belgians have ruled women’s tennis for years in a row and have earned many Olympic medals, in spite of being such a small country. So suck on that. Or don’t. I couldn’t give a fuck. Moving on..
    (6) Yes, the mayonnaise.. You know, you’re not REALLY obliged to ‘drown’ your fries in it. And no, fries aren’t enough in and of themselves, you need a sauce to go with them. Excuse the Belgians for liking some extra flavour with their fries and trying to make fellow Belgians and tourists alike happy by offering them a wide range of flavours to choose from. Btw, who are you, the food police? Oh yeah, ‘moules frites’ is awesome, to some it may seem like a strange combo but you should at least try it before you go judging all over the Internet..or whatever the hell this little blog of yours is.
    (7) the thing you’re holding is exactly what it says : shrimp salad. Shrimp are quite popular since (and you probably didn’t know this) but Belgium has a coastline! Imagine that! Are we learning yet?
(8)Not really getting your point on the whole beer thing. You think it’s weird that they’re made by silent monks? …… does ANY of your source material date from after the French Revolution (which was in 1789 as i’m sure you didn’t know). Christ! Just HAVE A FUCKING BEER and stop trying to make it sound ‘weird’ because it’s Belgian or whatever.
    (9) Belgians don’t hate themselves. They also are not French nor Dutch, they only SPEAK one of those languages. Also, ‘Flemish’ is NOT a fancy word for Dutch, it only refers to the many dialects in the Northern half of the country which sound very different from general Dutch. Furthermore, juggling 3 different languages can indeed be pretty tricky, but Belgian politics work through compromise, which in itself has everything to do with the origin story of Belgian (it was created as a buffer-state between France and Germany and because it is therefore an artificial state, tensions tend to arise. The fact that there are tensions because of this, is not due to the fact that Belgium is a ‘silly weird little country’ full of silly little Belgians; it’s more something that happens to made up states. For more info on that : see the many civil wars and genocides in Africa. Or, i dunno, pick up a fucking book on the subject).
    (10) Yes, they didn’t have a government for a while. Yes, they protested peacefully and threw ironic streetparties. Those bastards… But hey, in the end, the got a new government, lead by the first openly gay, of Italian origin but French speaking Prime Minister the country (and by extension, the world) has ever seen. And things seem to be working out pretty well. So yeah, there were some difficulties but they persevered et voilà, they made a progressive move through compromise. Everybody’s happy!
    (11) Manneken Pis is indeed a symbol of Brussels, but no, the entire ‘CAPITAL’ isn’t laughing at it alongside with you. You might just be alone in this. It’s actually pretty adorable, you should go see it. As for Antwerp, the dude holding the hand is more than just, you know, another dude holding a hand. There’s actually a really cool myth behind it. I won’t tell you because i’m getting tired of educating you, but look it up (NOT ON WIKIPEDIA).
    (12) Are.you.shitting.me.with the whole “Atomium which is an indescribable large silver monument of sticks and balls”-thing???!!! It’s called the ATOMIUM. ATOM-IUM, ring a friggin’ bell yet? It’s an ATOM, you dumb fuck! It was put there for the World Exhibit to educate stupid little shits like you. I’m sad to say, it apparently failed…
    (13) No one gives a flying fuck whether that prime minister knew the words to the national anthem or just happened to start singing the wrong one. He was a bit of a twat anyway, who cares?! But hey, here’s an interesting tid-bit for ya! Did you know that Brussels is the European Capital (as in : the capital to the European Union) and that the first European President is Belgian? I’m guessing…. ‘no’?
So, I just think your text was badly written in that your facts were dated or just completely wrong. THAT is what offended me about your text. I like Belgium, it has an interesting mix of people, the food is great and there are many cool places to hang out. So don’t shit on an entire nation, pretending to know what you’re on about when clearly you’re not. I enjoy a good burn just as much as the next person, but only if done right. So good luck on your next try. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some fry-drowning to go do. Au revoir.

The awkward moment when you find out that people can’t laugh with themselves anymore and don’t know the term “irony”. Get a grip, man, I’m Belgian and found the article hilarious. To comment if Belgian is a “real country”: never heard the quote from Nigel Farange in the European parliament? And do you really need to insult to make your point? Says something about you as well

      • Jan Vansteenkiste / Apr 18 2013 1:17 pm

I think you need sarcasm here… Irony is when you try to correct somebody but make a mistake while doing so…

        • Lien / Apr 25 2013 7:25 pm

No its not, Irony is when you say the opposite of what you mean, (http://www.encyclo.nl/begrip/Ironie) sarcasm is humor with the intent of hurting someone, I must say I’m convinced that this wasn’t what the author of this blog-post had in mind.

      • The stupid belgian / Oct 14 2015 9:23 am

Cyrano says something about “I like to laugh about myself but I kill those who do it for me.”.

Im not that extreme but I like when Irony, or humour is, first of all, accurate and a minimum, but just the minimum of intelligence to make it fun.

    • Lisu-chan / Apr 18 2013 8:38 am

At first I thought ‘geebus, what a butthurt Belgian who can’t take a joke’ but your comment is so well written, and educational, I take my hat off for you!

I was joking. Why would I bother to sit down and write an article about a place that I didn’t like? I love Belgium, that’s why I wrote it.

    • Pieter / Apr 18 2013 1:49 pm

Funny post and a bit overexagerated (although understandable and indeed very well written) response. One thing to kyliebling however: the atomium is NOT an atom, so it’s a bit stupid calling him a dumbass for that part..

      • steven / Apr 18 2013 2:40 pm

Then what is the atomium? Please enlighten my day

        • Lien / Apr 25 2013 7:03 pm

It’s called a molecule, which is by definition a pack of atoms held together by electrons. This particular molecule is body centered cubic.
What I’m about to say now, O’m not exactly sure about but if I remember my lessons correctly the atom in the center is a carbon but that’s a whole different story…

      • Marcus / Apr 18 2013 2:47 pm

Its an image of how Iron would look as the accepted crystalized structure. So technically it is not an atom indeed, its multiple atoms (balls) bound together by elektron bounds (sticks)

      • Saskia / Apr 18 2013 2:55 pm

even though it is not a representation of an atom, it has still to do with science: “the whole forms the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times” – wikipedia.

      • nen belg / Apr 18 2013 4:58 pm

its the exact representation of an iron atom times 165billion, without the windows and the stairs ofc :p

      • nen belg / Apr 18 2013 5:06 pm

*atom shoud be a cel 🙂

      • GJ / Apr 18 2013 5:15 pm

it has to look like an iron ATOM (but obviously re-scalled). we all know the atomium is not literally an atom.

How can someone write something like this as it’s clear that this peson has never been in Belgium (or it’s a belgian, which wouldn’t suprise me at al).
And sorry but if it’s ment as a sarcastic joke, at least make it a good one and don’t put cow manure, like our friend so kindly puts it, in a blog.

      anyway.. Loved it

    • American4Belgium! / Apr 18 2013 2:55 pm

Excellent response. I’m confused by this “article”. Is it supposed to be a joke? Either way, it’s not funny, not to mention horribly written. I felt vindicated by reading your well crafted rebuttal. I would like to point out that fries in Belgium are called frites, not chips, and are the best in the world, as is the beer. And the chocolate. And the waffles. Belgium is amazing and as a fed up American who has pretty much had it with our complete horse shit of a Congress, I’m ready for a semi-permanent relocation. Belgium fits the bill! Visited in February for the Bruges beer festival and fell in love. Belgium, you’re amazing!

      Nice one, fellow belgian

    • Esn / Apr 18 2013 4:30 pm

ooooooooow sensitive. This proves that Belgians cannot take any jokes or criticism.

      • Remi / Aug 3 2014 4:53 am

It’s only a joke if the underlying observation is true. The man makes jokes based on erroneous facts. That spoils the joke because the Belgian reader does not recognize the hypothesis or immediately tags the hypothesis as false. By then, disappointment creeps in and the joke falls flat. I’m afraid the writer is at best aware of the Belgian stereotypes which as joke material have run their course a long time ago. I’m convinced a good humorous article can be written about Belgium, one even Belgians could appreciate. But that would require a deeper and more subtle knowledge than is displayed in the current article. As it stands, humor is hard to find in this article. It is hard to write a funny article about any country without the use of stereotypes.

    • cesar / Apr 18 2013 9:47 pm

    • Greet / Apr 22 2013 8:52 pm

Wow, calm down. Take a joke! I’m Belgian too and I thought this article was pretty funny. The author wasn’t serious, he was joking, and exaggerating for comedic effect.

(Also, I can’t help myself from saying this: as far as fact researching goes, we’re sadly not the first country in the world with a gay prime minister, Iceland beat us to that.)

    • danny / Apr 25 2013 6:26 am

” It’s an ATOM, you dumb fuck! “, Well that was awkard. The atomium is not the representation of an atom. In fact it’s an iron crystal and the nine balls represent it’s atom’s. Make sure you get youre facts straight before aggressively correcting an obviously humoristic blog.

    • Aliana / May 30 2013 3:51 am

Your aggression annoys me … Obviously, this is supposed to be a funny article. Be honest, Belgians are weird.

great! i’ve lived in madrid, london and dublin – now in brussels – and the belgian capital is by far the most culturally diverse, open minded and interesting city i’ve ever been in… for example, over 50% of brussels’ population is trilingual, speaking multiple languages is just normal here… the monotony of cities with a single dominant language and culture is boring to me and the level to which new yorkers, parisians etc keep telling themselves they live at the centre of the world makes them extremey inward-looking. the people here are a mix and therefore are HOT, plus they can laugh at themselves… whats not to love? ps – colin farrell grew up in ireland which is basically a huge farm and he is pretty retarded (bad actors being the lowest form of humanity)

    • Philip Merrin / Mar 25 2014 7:39 pm

Yes Belgium is a buffer country but of course Belgium came about because from 1565-1815 it was controlled by Spain and then Austria. So because of that occupation at a time the rest of Europe was fighting wars and settling on natural borders, Belgium was sort of quarantined, so when after a United Netherlands experiment failed after 15 years, Belgium declared itself as a sovereign country and that was agreed to by the major powers of Europe at the time – 1830. A problem remained the country consisted of two peoples the Flemings who share a language and culture with their northern neighbours Holland and the Walloons who share the French language and culture of France.

In my opinion if Belgium which was known as the South Netherlands had had the opportunity to battle with it’s neighbours the country would never have come about. Northern Belgium would most likely be one with Holland and the South, France.

Every country has its positive and negative sides to it and I am lacking some positives here 😦 Turning an entire country into a pet peeve seems to be a slight overreaction… ^^
I mean, pet peeves are supposed to be little things that annoy you like fingernails scratching over a chalkboard, not enitre countries :p (is that called racism? Just wondering.)

Even if this article is a joke or ironic, I don’t think your article is written in a clear enough manner that would make enough people realise this. Your vocabulary does not make the article engaging enough for a person to consider that it may be ironic and makes for an uneducating (or misinforming) article that slags off a country on stereotypes based on misinterpretations.

FYI Jeremy Clarkson is not a lead expert on countries in general. He is an expert in sarcasm though (as most Brits are ^^). Learn to recognise 😉

    • neiltheseal85 / Apr 18 2013 9:53 am

      • JO / Apr 18 2013 11:45 am

Hmmmm, but your blog is on the worldwide web, not just Australia. I’m a full-on proponent of humour and piss-taking and not taking life too seriously, but I was also always taught that a joke, if written/said well, will only work with its intended audience, and can have the complete opposite effect if not targeted right. Stereotypes (including the stereotype of a single ‘Australian’ sense of humour) can be bloody dangerous and damaging if perpetuated in a way that is not clearly identified as a light-hearted ribbing (so thank you for clarifying). Take Billy Connolly – offensive as sin to so many parts of society, but he’s a comedian and we all know not to take him too seriously.

Cor, talk about rock and a hard place! At least you got one heck of a conversation going, eh!

      • Lukas / Apr 18 2013 12:00 pm

neiltheseal, don’t worry. I, as a Belgian, really enjoyed your article and sincerely apologize for my fellow countrymen, who don’t seem to be able to get a joke and not take themselves too seriously. I always thought Belgians were a sarcastic people who could laugh with themselves and didn’t take themselves too seriously, but apparently I was wrong (as also recently proved by some other butthurt Belgian on internet fora)

      • Binz / Apr 18 2013 12:22 pm

You’re forgetting how well everyone’s English is around here. It’s good enough for many foreigners to not even realize that it’s not one of our national languages. And that is because the Belgian educational system is among the best in the world.

“And that is because the Belgian educational system is among the best in the world.”

Sorry but that is a national myth that dates back to the 70’s.

Belgium offers a very good THEORETICAL education, and has a large pool of good specialists to pass on their knowledge in the medical & engineering fields, but the Belgian model of education is very conservative and rigid, which doesn’t do much for lateral thinkers.

Critical thinking, debating skills and creativity are not at all stimulated or appreciated in the old fashioned Belgian education system (both in secondary and at college/university level) – with very few exceptions.
There are a only few dynamic and forward thinking institutions that are not run by the catholic, conservative middle classes.

Artistic, ‘new’-thinkers are suffocated by the traditional Belgian cautiousness and complete aversion to change or risk.

For knowledge – YES, Belgium is a great place to get smart. But don’t expect their system to produce the next gread mind of our time.

      • Anish / Apr 18 2013 7:14 pm

You’re forgetting how *good* everyone’s English is around here.

Man that has to be on purpose.

        • Lisu-chan / Apr 22 2013 9:18 pm

Well is perfectly fine and I’m pretty sure you mean had instead of has, as the comment’s already posted, paste tense etc etc… But surely you did that on purpose?

    • Lukas / Apr 18 2013 11:55 am

Dude, how can it not be clear that this is a joke?!? Don’t take yourself so serious.

“FYI Jeremy Clarkson is not a lead expert on countries in general. He is an expert in sarcasm though”.
Maybe this might have been an obvious clue (one of the many) ??

      • Disappointed :( / Apr 18 2013 12:39 pm

In retrospect, yes. To readers who are irate the moment they get to that part of the article, maybe not immediately 😉 thàt is the danger of these type of articles 🙂

I’m thinking that looking at the amount of smileys I use should be an obvious clue as to the fact that I do not take myself THAT seriously :p

    • Phil / Mar 15 2015 4:12 pm

Lets face it Jeremy Clarkson is just one big piss taker!

  16. tdp / Apr 18 2013 10:07 am

calling an atom a “sticks and balls” thingy probably made you the smartest kid in school right?

    • Hendrik / Apr 18 2013 12:03 pm

I want to put this right: the Atomium (I’m looking at it from behind my desk now) is an iron crystal. There’s nine balls. Every ball is an atom.

      • Niek Vanhulle / Apr 18 2013 12:55 pm

every ball is an electron… sighs

      • Hendrik / Apr 18 2013 1:06 pm

Sorry Niek! I’m a chemist and I know what I’m talking about. Iron has atom number 26. So it has 26 electrons. Please check before you reply…
This is taken from the Atomium official website: Het Atomium beeldt de structuur van een ijzerkristal uit, 165 miljard keer vergroot, en heeft de vorm van een kubus die op een van zijn punten staat.
        Sigh indeed….

  17. Robbert / Apr 18 2013 10:12 am

hahaha. I’m a Belgian and some things are true, although very exaggerated. We are a crazy bunch :-). BUT, we also have incredible festivals (Like Gentse Feesten, I Love Techno,…), Universities that rank in the top 100 of the world, a very important export of knowledge, and we speak more than one language ;-).
So let us conclude that Belgium is a very interesting in being ‘not realy a’ country 😀

  18. Jardinero / Apr 18 2013 10:28 am

Anyone remotely interested in Belgium should read ‘The Art of being Belgian’

  19. Lucid Mind / Apr 18 2013 10:37 am

    That’s Belgium alright 🙂
And don’t we all just love it ..

  20. Philippe Symons / Apr 18 2013 10:38 am

I’m belgian myself and had a good laugh reading this. I guess we’re pretty weird huh? There was even some stuff I didn’t know.

But seriously, even though this article was quite funny, it constitutes a very distorted view on Belgium. Because of this I mostly agree with Kyliebling and “Disappointed :(“. (except for the butthurt feelings, as I found this article quite funny). The way you wrote this article you could make any country look weird, as you just cherrypicked some random events/facts. 😉

  21. Steve / Apr 18 2013 10:40 am

What you forget to mention is that globally we are a leading country, intellectually we have top of the line scientists working in global fields.

Most of us are either bi-or trilingual, I for example speak fluent Dutch English and French which already makes me a better person than most brits/Americans.

And let’s not forget that the UK barely has what society calls ‘cuisine’ . I mean blubber & chips is what you call food? :p

    • Modep / Jun 25 2013 10:50 pm

i think he is from australia. And most people are not tri-lingual in my experience. In general the english is really bad, and I am not impressed with the french that most Flemish speak.

  22. jawadde / Apr 18 2013 11:18 am

funny, easy to read but not always correct and a little insulting sometimes.
I’m from Belgium and it’s weird that if their is something blogged or written on the web about Belgium that we always come out like a bounce of stupid, boring hillbillies.

Come on!! be serious, we have the best festivals of the world (check the charts), the best beer (also proven), a very good cuisine, … and we are very down to earth. Maybe that’s why we are such an easy target. Face it, VIP’s can walk around our streets without getting attacked by 1000 of crazy ‘have no life’ fans. Maybe that’s why the stars find Belgium boring, because we see them as regular joe’s and when they try to show off, we’ll show them 😉
I can tell you some stupid things about other countries “around” Belgium too.
And what collin Farrell says about Bruges might be correct, it’s a medieval city, what did you expect??… A blazing high tech city with a big nightlife? I don’t think so… you just need to find the right places. I would say, come and see for yourself. I think most people would be VERY surprised.
We have our problems but if you look at the world right now, we’re not the only one… right?

    • Jonas / Apr 18 2013 11:36 am

ge hebt voor de volle 100% gelijk :p

    • steven / Apr 18 2013 2:59 pm

      Nice comment,
As a belgian, I think that some of the craziest, most awesome people come out of Bruges and next to that I’ve experienced that the ‘West-vlamingen’ have quiet the reputation.

  24. Maarten / Apr 18 2013 11:45 am

Being Belgian myself, I find this blog hilarious. I am suprised that so many Belgians are offended by this article: it’s so exagerated that it’s obvious that the guy just loves us! He’s just using his sarcasm to make this more interesting to read. To blow things out of proportion is a form of humour, you know…

com’on guys, if there’s one thing about Belgians, is that they are easy going: a protest march & eating fries where other countries would start a civil war; a prime minister that doesn’t know the national anthem: in other countries he would have to resign, we just have a laugh etc.
and as said above: we don’t take ourselves too seriously, so let’s not start doing that 🙂

  25. Kaptan Kaos / Apr 18 2013 11:46 am

What ever .. you guys just don’t understand us, How could you, It’s a belgian thing 😀

  26. Willem / Apr 18 2013 11:54 am

I think this is a very pretentious article by a very pretentious prick, most likely coming from a country with much less culture then we have

  27. Hendrik / Apr 18 2013 11:57 am

This article is not very funny, not very well written, and is based on a lot of cliches.
Off course I understand what humor is, so I don’t want to get into details.
But fries with mayonnaise? Funny? And what about fish and chips?
But it’s a fact that many Belgians have a negative idea about their country, although it’s one of the richest countries in the world with very good healthcare.
And it’s a national sport to drag our own country down. Funny, yes, but the result is that many not so clever people take over this mentality to shit in their own stable all the time.
And that is NOT funny. One could say this country is full of spoiled, unhappy people, due to this low self esteem. An article like this won’t help.
So, excuse me for not laughing. This is what I call cheap humor.

  28. Anna / Apr 18 2013 12:01 pm

Hahaha I really enjoyed reading this! I moved to Belgium, and it’s fun in here but I’m really happy not being a Belgian!

The french fries with mayo SUCKS really hard, it’s like McDo in America… Promote overweight!

    • Marcus / Apr 18 2013 3:00 pm

You don’t HAVE to take mayo. Its a free country, you should consider opening your mouth and tell the man/woman behind the counter you don’t want mayo or at least, not a lot.

Dude, do your research, and learn how to write a decent blog dude…

  31. Lieven / Apr 18 2013 12:40 pm

    Hi mate,

As a well travelled person I must say, I really didn’t get the humor nor the purpose of this piece concerning Belgium. We try as much as possible to be diplomatic and to learn eachothers languages ( I speak 8 btw ) and are a country with indeed, some weird habbits, as all countries have, this is the challenging part of different cultures having to live together.

As stated above, Belgium is an artificial country, while creating it, having seperated populations from their original homegrounds, in order to protect Europe from wars, which obviously didn’t succeed. Our country has been the scene of two worldwars, the first WW having been most prominent.
It is not mentioned in your masterpiece but there are 150 Commenwealth war cemeteries in our country, some of them populated with your fellow country-men of which you should be very proud.

Please come and vist the Meningate in Ieper and experience the sound of the Last Post. I bet ( not on a cows shit-drop) that you will be very quite and moved, if not, crying.

After that, I am sure you will re-think how to write about our little country.

Yes I am a Belgian and yes I am a Fleming, but mind you if one of us would ever write like that about down-under, of course, nobody would read it, who reads stuff written by Belgians?

In any case, I suggest Australians do not use this piece of info when they plan for their OE, since they will be missing out on a great place and regret it for ever when they later hear about it.

Next time when I am in Australia I wiil maybe have a couple of VB’s with my mates and have no worries about what people write about our country, since I am of the opinion that each country has its greatness, because of its people and its heritage,

    Best regards,

Lieven Huysentruyt, or maybe Hercule Poirot (Inspector Clouseau is a Frenchman)

Ps.: hope you ever have the capacity to speak or write our 3 national languages as we (Belgians) have, to write in your mothertongue, which is Her Majesty’s English I believe

    • Esn / Apr 18 2013 4:23 pm

I met a lot of Flemish people who could not speak english or french or german. At all. A lot of them. And they did not seem interested at all. This might be different in Brussels where speaking languages is essential to doing bussiness, since Brussels got made capital of Europe. It would only be logic if people speak some languages there. It is a way to get good jobs. But in general I find the Flemish very unwelcome to strangers and unwilling to speak their language.
So you can only speak for yourself and maybe you fellow polyglot friends.

And before you start bragging again, I speak more than one language. There is no need to diss people who come from a country where it is not necessairy to speak more than one language. People in general don’t learn languages to help others. They just learn languages to improve their chances on the job market.

I would not recommand anyone to visit Belgium, except for the music festivals. They are good and tend to attract open minded people. But very often I find the Belgians very narrow minded, petty, unfriendly and unwelcoming to strangers. This you will never experience as an outsider, because you are an insider. Instead of shooting the messenger you might wonder why someone would write this.

      • Vnze / Jan 6 2015 1:57 am

You must have been to Antwerp? In my city we are in fact very welcomming to strangers and we love to learn from them (especially the food, Belgians love good food)

  32. Pascal B. / Apr 18 2013 1:07 pm

Jezus… I’m a bit ashamed to be Belgian after reading some of the reactions here. Come on, seriously, ever heard about “irony” guys/girls?

@ Benjamin: yes, the Atomium is an iron atom (anybody with some elementary knowledge of chemistry can see that), but it doesn’t look yellow or green does it, it’s bright silver since it’s been restored a few years ago… 🙂

And as Neil explained himself, he has a very kind of peculiar humour… After all, he’s from down under… How would you feel if you walk upside down all your life LOL? 🙂 (Sorry Neil… just had to)

    • Nico Van de Venne / Apr 18 2013 1:24 pm

True, but setting the record strait… I like who we are, and I felt like sharing :).

      • Pascal B. / Apr 18 2013 1:33 pm

A bunch of good humoured, friendly people that have their own problems, indeed… But come on.. some people do take the obviously hilarious comments WAY too serious…

And btw Neil: “They also eat this, whatever it’s supposed to be” Contrary to what the name of the maker suggests, it’s “grey shrimp salad”.

    • Marcus / Apr 18 2013 3:10 pm

Not about taking it serious – this is after all, the internet – but I consider this very shoddy writing.

I’m not a fan of Belgium, I live in it and I laugh with various things here, but this blog/article is very bad at what it is supposed to be: a sarcastic/humorous view on the country.

For example, stating that the Belgians protested the extended formation of the country is less ridiculous than what actually really happened. You – as self procclaimed Belgian – should very much be aware that rather than a protest, it was a downright celebration of our own idiotic governmental system (not our social system, which is so damn good it sustained the country during this entire period) and the sheer incompetence they’ve shown the world.

I couldn’t laugh with this article, just because it was bad beyond being a joke.

  33. frank / Apr 18 2013 1:14 pm

‘TOMORROWLAND’… rings a bell, my dear?
Voted best festival IN THE WORLD…. Does that sound boring to you, or ‘PUKKELOP’, I LOVE TECHNO, The whole dance scene that was pretty much co-invented in BELGIUM’, still sounds boring. I’ve travelled a bit in my days, never felt bored here… ok, maybe the weather isn’t that great, all the time, but does it at your end? Get your facts straight and then start writing, isn’t that a good idea? Wish you all the best, and do come and visit us again when your depression is over… 🙂

  34. Nico Van de Venne / Apr 18 2013 1:22 pm

    Well, where do I start…
You are far from the point… you didn’t realy get the right information (face it who realy belives Jeremey anyway, I believe STIG more then him…).
Belgium is a nice country, it isn’t perfect, it IS complex (but so are the people living here).
To give you a feeling, Flanders and the rest of Belgium have been concured so many times that we can adapt to any situation and any person in front of us. We speak to English people,… we talk English, We talk to Germans… we talk German, we talk to a French person (not a Wallon 🙂 ), we speak French, etc….

I would like to see you do the same, or any other country’s (no pesonal attack, just a fact).
We are adapters, and we are for no violence protesting. Why cry with misserie when you can laugh and kick it in the face… 😉

I live here, I’m Flemish, I work in an international company (look at Linkedin). I don’t say I love it here, but who can honestly say for 100% they love there country (unless you are brainwashed, or live in a big country where you don’t know what is going on your capital).

Making a movie, doesn’t make you an expert in a country, and honestly who is an actor that has really got the knowledge to analyse a country…

    etc., etc.

Visit my place and I’ll show you the real country (btw, we have a higher % more expats in our capital then most big counrty’s). Welkom in België, waar alles mogelijk is…

    • Jay / Apr 18 2013 4:13 pm

I don’t get the “not a Wallon” part… Well, I’m pretty sure I know what you mean but if that’s what I think, that’s probably the main problem in this country… Belgium is one of the best places to live and people from there should realize that and try to respect each other. If we’re so laid-back, cool, caring about important things, this should be easy to do…

  35. bedece / Apr 18 2013 1:53 pm

    Mèh..
I challenge you to come over when we are having our “Gense Feesten”.
Drink one of our beers (in England they call our beer ‘the wife beater’, because foreigners can’t handle it and go totally mental, pussies).
Eat a drowned fry and find yourself totally addicted.
Talk to some Belgians and find yourself totally in love.
Visit some cultural places, learn about Belgian artists.

    Then go home and weep.

Anyway, just avoid Antwerp, which is mostly parking.

    • Pascal B. / Apr 18 2013 1:59 pm

LOLOLOL…. you’re going to upset the Antwerp people there, with that last remark 🙂

Have to repeat my initial comments though, I’m ASHAMED to be Belgian seeing how so many people are butthurt because of a little bit of irony/humour…

We’re already aware of the fact that no one in his right mind would go to our country on vacation and that nobody can understand our politics and stuff. Frankly, some stereotypes and irony is just fun.

The only beer they call wife beater is Stella Artois. And Antwerp is by far the most beautiful city of the country, so swallow those words again please. Yes indeed, Belgium is by far the nicest country in the world, and all other nations are just jealous because of that fact.

we don’t give a crap about our national anthem cause we care about important things

i you think belgium is boring you didn’t went deep enough and talked to the wrong people
…. or maybe juuuust maybe you have a boring way of looking at things, think about that

to the person who wrote this(i believe neil was the name): you are such a massive idiot i’m not even mad i feel sorry for you.
i hope your children find guesome death before you do, cheers

    • Gonza / Apr 18 2013 3:13 pm

what a hateful comment! and pretty insulting for french speaker too 😮

    • Esn / Apr 18 2013 4:09 pm

Why would the French speaking Belgians have to adapt to the Flemish? It is a totally unimportant language that almost nobody speaks and even the Flemish don’t always understand eachother because of strong local dialects. If I had to choose a language to raise my children I would choose French, it opens up a larger world to them then Flemish ever could.

Belgium is impossible to govern. Everything has to go through a german and a Flemish and a French commity. There is no unity. But god forbid anyone would ever point this out, because no-one is allowed to speak critisim about Belgium. The fact that you don’t know your national anthem just demonstrates that there is no such thing as a national identity.

Belgian people have serious problems with critisism.

      • Philip Merrin / Mar 25 2014 7:54 pm

Perhaps Walloons should take a leaf from the Flemish and learn some of the language of their fellow country people, not because it’s a big language but because it’s the primary language of 60% of your fellow country people. For centuries the Flemish were forced to accept french in their lives, like the Walloons they too are a proud people and you should respect their language and traditions.

Flemish people mostly speak and write standard Dutch these days, just like Walloons speak and write standard French nowadays.

My Mother is a truly bi-lingual Belgian she spoke french at School and home and Flemish locally as they lived near Mechelen. Whenever she went to Paris they might comment that she’s from the North rather than come straight out with Belgium. When she went Amsterdam and spoke Flemish they might comment she’s from the South.

Wherever you go in the World you will find local accents but dialects in Belgium have all but dies out. Every normal Flemish person without a speech defect can have a lovely conversation in Holland – trust me.

    • Jay / Apr 18 2013 5:26 pm

What you said is just what’s wrong in this country…

      • Jay / Apr 18 2013 5:27 pm

        Besides, it’s completely false.

    • Me :) / Apr 18 2013 7:48 pm

I don’t see why “wallons not speaking dutch” is the only reason of our 3 languages… Even if we were all perfect bilingual (or better trilingual), we will still have 3 languages in the country…
Het belangrijkste punt is dat we proberen om Nederlands te spreken. Nee?

However i found this article very funny ( not well informed but still funny ) !

  37. eric hofman / Apr 18 2013 2:31 pm

What a lot of silly crap! If written by a Belgian, it could be considered to be hilarious, written by a foreign person, it’s just plain stupid.

  40. Mercedes / Apr 18 2013 2:59 pm

As a Belgian myself I found this pretty amusing, however I don’t really agree with all of it, I mean the political situations are pretty much true and Belgians hate to take serious actions. But the thing is even without a government we were still functioning rather well, I’d like to see other countries do that, and besides the culinary stuff its actually worth checking into the history of Belgium, for those who like war related stories are crazy myths of course. But yeah enough ranting from me. For being such a small butt hole for a country it still has its awesome perks.

  41. Wout / Apr 18 2013 3:02 pm

Agreed, Belgium (the country I come from), is a strange country. But it’s sad that everybody is taking the piss out of the poor country and their inhabitants. In fact, I think all non-Belgians are just jealous. The social security system of Belgium is by far the best in the world, Belgians speak at least 2 or 3 languages (I speak 5 myself). Belgian education is one of the best in the world. Many things are invented by Belgians, for example: The saxophone, the world wide web, the Gramme Machine, The Body Mass Index BMI, Many medicines and pharmaceutical drugs, the European Union… You can say whatever you want about the Belgians, but they are a great bunch of people. We also represent Europe, as our capital is also the EU capital. And surrounded by big powerful countries, we still exist today. Many nations in the world should take an example of what Belgium as such a small country achieved in our short existance.

    • L / Jan 28 2018 12:17 am

      Good stuff. Bro. Agreed.

  42. Gonza / Apr 18 2013 3:11 pm

Well, it could have been funny but it’s not. All in all, the fact that there isn’t anything well documented here, and that there isn’t any positive note in this article, makes it just obviously stupid. All the foreigners I know who visited Belgium and stayed there for more than a day told me how cool this country is, Belgians have a great sense of humor, they know hos to party, they have great beer, they are friendly and open-minded. Sorry for not being arrogant douches. And, when we demonstrate, we prefer having a good time than starting riots but “geez! how stupid of us!”. Anyway, done here.

Glad that a well distinguished gentleman finally wrote an overwhelmingly interesting article like this about Belgium! Let’s hope everyone reads it, even more: please blog it all over the world, fellow Belgians! Twitter it, Facebook it, yell it from mountain tops and from the nether regions of the Netherlands! Teach it in schools around the world, erect statues for this writer (not in Belgium though), it should be common knowledge!!!
So as to make sure that absolute twatty nitwits as the fine gentleman who has written this joyful peace of literary art (yes! art!! Why bother writing books?! Blog is art!) would never visit this multi-faceted country. It keeps the place ridden of infestations of asses (the animal or the body part, choose wisely if you can speak more than one language). So it means peace and quiet for the proud Belgian to sarcastically hate his country 🙂
    Bravo!
Concluding remark: as a Belgian, I did enjoy the article! Makes it so nicely clear how weird and wonderful this country is. However, if you only look at the surface, I’m sure this article is gospel truth! To the person who does not worship superficiality: this country reveals its meaning at some point. Come to it with respect and humble interest and I’m sure even this gentleman will get enriched by the experience.
By the way, did you know that we watch the cow shit while drinking beer, talking to the monks that can’t say a word about politics in one of the other Belgian languages while throwing hands of giants (rethorical image? Throwing hand of giant = making powerless of bigger force… Where o where did this happen many times in Belgian history?? And, wait… We are still an independent country? Damn, Belgians must be losers) to guys pissing in public (the beers ey…)…. Please dear eloquent writer of this fine blog: go on writing these blogs. It amused me! And I was amused writing the reply! My sincere apologies if you actually meant any of the things you have written in a non-ironic/sarcastic way or any other way that should not have been interpreted as a form of humour. If you did mean it with some humorous intent: come on over, I just bought a new cow: all bets are up!!
    Sincerely yours
    G

I think you forgot the part about the “lange tenen”.
If you go by the comments on this article, you’d think all Belgians have no sence of humor and go into hissy fits when they get slightly offended by a joke. Which is ironic since they are the ones making themselves look bad, not the article.
Relax people, nobody is trying to attack you. learn to take jokes less seriously.

We invented the best beer, chocolate, fries (yes WE did, not the French) and many other of the world’s most delicious things. We’ve provided some of the world’s best tennis players and cyclists. Brussels is the capital of the European Union and thus of every European diplomatic office of any importance.
Australia, on the other hand, is known for kangeroos and koala’s.
    Case and point.
    Long live the Great Outback(wards)!

  49. Es / Apr 18 2013 3:34 pm

awawawaw, some people are very sensitive. And that is what I experienced when I lived in Belgium. They seem to not like themselves very much, but never ever criticize the country, they will chew your head off.
    *
This article really resonates with me. Some facts might be wrong, but some are spot on. This is a bleeding blog, bloody whiners. An opinion. If it rubs you the wrong way, try to wonder why it upsets you. Then again I am not surprised that the Belgians act so upset. They are not famous for being introspective or for having any self criticism in an open way.
Just to illustrate this: When the Dutch failed to form a government after the last elections, a Dutch politician made a reference to the Belgian situation, and said: We need to avoid A Belgian Situation at all cost. Referring to the inability to form a government for more than a year. The whole of Belgium was upset with Holland for saying that. They should be upset with their own politicians and their failing leaders instead of being upset with some foreign politician saying it like it is. And there are plenty of examples to illustrate the Flemish super sensitivity to what ever criticism foreigners and especially the Dutch have.
    *
They don’t like the Dutch very much. This is curious, because the Dutch love the Belgians, they do. They love going there, they love the way they speak, they love the fake politeness that they mistake for friendliness. They love the cuisine that is far superior to the Dutch cuisine. The museums are great. And when a Dutch sports team gets eliminated from a competition, the Dutch will root for the Belgians and feel proud by proxy. Because the Dutch feel related to the Flemish, like we are family.
    *
The Belgians, but mostly the Flemish are a bunch of insecure sour pusses. Constantly comparing themselves to others and loosing this comparison in their own eyes.
    *
I know this because I have lived in Flanders and Wallon. I had a good time in Wallon. If you speak the language: French, you will have a super time. But in Flanders, Especially in Antwerp, it was horrible. This was in the 90’s so things might have changed a little, but most people’s sentiments haven’t.
I went to university there. It was so hard to connect with people. They really stayed to themselves. The Antwerp population is very xenophobic. Ultra Rightwing parties are very successful there. They will disrespect anyone who is not from Antwerp.
It was impossible to find work there. Every time I phoned to apply for a job they would just bluntly say that they would not hire anybody from Holland.
    *
You might not believe this, but there were actually cafes in Antwerp that had signs on the windows, saying: Dutch not welcome.
That should have provoked a massive boycott from the Dutch tourists. But it did not. Because we kind of understand where they are coming from. Yes the Dutch are loud and outspoken. And we felt sorry for them for being disturbed by the behavior of some of the more boorish fellow Dutch.
    *
Driving in Belgium is like driving in a third world country. The roads are in a super bad condition. On the ring roads around the major cities the lights are turned off to safe money? The signs are unclear, the exit an entry lanes on the highways are the shortest in Europe. Everybody, really everybody is speeding. The way to get your driving license is a little odd. You do not need a specialist. They can learn to drive from other drivers who already have a license. Since the Belgian driver in general is a bad driver, there will be an endless supply of bad drivers. Before the Belgians get upset, don’t get upset with me get upset with yourselves. The numbers speak for themselves: In the Netherlands 640 dead in traffic in 2010 and 742 in our tiny neighboring country. And while Belgium’s number is still going up, Holland’s is going down. Our government might be a bit overprotective and patronizing, but at least they care enough to try and avoid casualties in traffic. KNowing all this I feel very unsafe driving in Belgium. Especially when speeding get really up close, to push you away. They cut you off, the usually so docile Belgians are really aggressive in traffic.
There is a lot of dislike against the Dutch simmering under the surface and this is expressed on the road. When I drive with Belgian plates the behavior is still irresponsible, but less aggressive.
    *
Belgian people need to relax and work on their self-confidence.
All this petty behavior is not bringing you happiness. You cannot avoid interaction with the dutch. You have to learn to deal with the fact that we think of as you family and that we love you. Pissing off some dutch, with petty and small minded behavior will not influence the whole nation’s opinion. They will just think that you are shy and forgive you.
But I know you are rude.

Wow! You nailed it. Damn that is very well expressed and I’m sure most Dutch and even “non-Belgians would agree. Now watch the Belgians storm your castle armed to the hilt with their greatest weapon…”The art of self-denial.”

    To some of the wiseguys:
Brussels is the capital of Europe (Union), Belgium & Flanders.
Namur (Namen) is the capital of the French speaking part (Wallonia).
Antwerp is the capital of the Antwerp Province. Nothing more 😉

And yes, please.. please get all your facts right. This is kindergarten knowledge…

So sad to read so many bullshits coming from one and only person…
This article isn’t even “ironic” or about “sarcasm”, as said before. It’s just about someone who never did a step in that country and talking about what he heard in Pulp Fiction and In Bruges… Seriously ? That’s your source ?

Even so, I decided to read it all just to confirm my first idea about the autor: you have no culture at all about Belgium. So you’d better avoid this kind of “article” when you have such a lack of knowledge about the subject.

And Kyliebing did a great job by proving you, step by step how much you were wrong.

  52. funmodus / Apr 18 2013 3:52 pm

No meanigfull Belgians? What about this:

Adolphe Sax: inventor of the saxophone
    René Magritte: surrealistic master-painter
    Toots Thielemans: honorred jazz musician
Herman Van Rompuy: first president of the EU
Hergé (Georges Remi): cartoonist, Tin Tin
    James Ensor: master-painter
Paul-Henri Spaak: one of the invetors of the EU
    Leo Baekeland: inventor-chemicus
Father Damien: saint, helper to people with leprosy
    Eddy Merckx: greatest cyclist ever
    Peter Paul Rubens: baroque master-painter
Jan Van Eyck: one of the most important master-painters of the Flemish Primitives
Gerardus Mercator: cartographer, philosopher and mathematician
Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin: champion tennisplayers
    Jan Fabre: multidisciplinair modern artist
Jaques Rogge: president of the International Olympic Committee
Jan De Nul: former of one of the most important dredge companys in the world

    etc, etc………

Politicaly Brussels is the capital of the EU, has the UN, NATO…
Brussels has one of the most beatifull market squares in the world and has more than 100 musea!
Antwerp has one of the most important sea ports, diamant center and also fashion designers in the world.
Brugge and Ghent are tipped as one of the most beautifull ancient citys in the world, who has been frequently visited by celebrities.

Architecture is very divers, from old flemish gothic to the art nouveau of Victor Horta, also a Belgian.

And yes the French fries are actually “frenched” fries, not French at all!
Belgium has the number one beer of the world: Westvleteren and no other country has more divers and tasty beers.
Belgian chocolate is known as the best in the world and is also inventor of the “praline”.
Belgium has 3 official languages, Dutch, French and German. The most speak also English, so i don’t think the Belgians are dumb or stupid.
Cyclism is one of Belgium’s national sports, with “Ronde van Vlaanderen” as one of the most important and prestige in cyclism.
Belgium’s influence in jazz and electronic music is indisputable.

If Belgium wasn’t worth living in, why did Albert Einstein and Marvin Gaye lost their heart there?

So yes, Belgium is a little country with a lot of arts, cartoonists, designers, inventors, music, tourism and good food!

And oh yeah… at last but not least… even the Smurfs comes from Belgium too, lol 🙂 🙂

    • Esn / Apr 19 2013 10:27 am

Politicaly Brussels is the capital of the EU, has the UN, NATO… This is hardly an achievement by the Belgians. Brussels was made capital to safe the country. At the moment Belgium is hardly producing anything that could keep the country affloat in any decent way.

In the 80 Brussels was a pathetic shithole. The city was bankrupted and a whole lot of buildings were empty, just falling apart. As the importance of the EU grew, so grew the economy of Brussels.

With out the rescue operation of making Brussels the capiatal of Europe the country would have been bankrupted.

      • Hildebrandt / Apr 19 2013 12:59 pm

One bankrupt city does NOT make a bankrupt country. I agree mostly with funmodus. This article is a piece of crap written by an immature tard who probably spent no more than two days in our country. Also, nobody hates the German speaking people.

  54. Piet / Apr 18 2013 4:06 pm

    I must react to this.

I’m Flemish and our prime minister speaks Dutch. He has an accent ofcourse, but he speaks better Dutch than any other Walloon I’ve ever met! Ofcourse the Flemish are perfect in French, NOT.

We do have a national sport: cycle racing. We’ve won 26 world championships, which is a world record.

Manneken Pis is not insane. I know it’s funny, but I can’t understand what’s wrong with it. Tourists love Manneken Pis. We don’t need tall buildings or expensive art pieces to please them. (Even though Belgium is known to have the best engineers of all time.)
Jeanneke Pis is hardly a monument. Almost nobody here even knows it exists, it’s just a statue hidden in a little alley somewhere in Brussels.

The statue in Antwerp is not weird at all! There’s an amazing story behind it, that’s not weirder than any other legend around the world.

Oh, and did you know Belgium has some of the best music festivals in the world? I’m talking about Tomorrowland and Rock Werchter, which attracts people from all over the world, from Dutchmen to Australians.

I love Belgium, we have small, but amazing cities, we have nature. Yes, we’ve had some political issues, we’ve had them for years, but that’s not a reason to make fun of the Belgian population nor their stories and habits.

    • Dina Vivan / Apr 19 2013 7:11 am

We have amazing music festivals like TomorrowLand
We are at the basis of the European Union, and have been provided by the peace never known before
We have an amazing health care system
We have beautiful old cities with A LOT of history … And so much more

I don’t really agree when you sum up Belgium as a Game with a shitting cow..

BUT we have a lot of “Irony” so …. 😉

you fucking retard, belgium is much more than chocolate, beer and fries. Being arrogant does not mean you’re right or funny !
don’t know where you from and i don’t wanna know it. If you’re an English, well you’re an asshole because you should better look on city’s like manchester or liverpool before talking about “shitty bruges” who’s is recognize all over the world for his beauty (but you need a brain to appreciate it, i agree), you should better look on how you’re acting in north Ireland, oppressing these people since century’s. You should better look on fucking margaret tatcher who oppressed her own labour forces to save the rich people of your country. We never had people so fucked up over here, NEVER !

And if you’re an American, well you should better shut you mounth because you come from the most fucked up country in world and we don’t have any critics to take from people who live in the only country who manage a major war every 10 years and who thinks they are the fucking police of a world who hates them. Colin Farrel is maybe a good actor (i don’t think so) but he’s certainly the smartest so fuck him and fuck you !

to Dave: French people does NOT HAVE to adapt them selves to flamish people. We’re are NOT living in a flamish country so fuck you too, you flamish people are the arrogant problem of this country, thinking you’re soooo better than the south. Wanna know something, you can find the same dick heads north and south and some place in flanders are really not better than wallonie so shut you mounth you flamish extremist. Flanders is the only region of europe passing rascist laws. And NO, Brussels is not Flamish. It’s not because you made it the hometown of flanders that it is. Antwerp is your fucking hometown, keep your hands out of brussels. Brussels, is 95% french talking, YOU FLAMISH HAVE TO ADAPT, not the opposit. And i really don’t give a fuck about you’re opinion on french talking belgians because i’m both french and flamish and all your shitty believes really means nothing. Do your own fucking country, we don’t fucking care about flanders and her destiny, we don’t give a fuck about you flamish belgians. You are arrogant rascist and we’re bored about you. Remember the “Wallen buiten” movement in leuven in the 50’s ? we french belgians never act like this on flamish belgians. You guy’s are fucking racist extremists and we are pissed off !!!

    • anonyme / Apr 19 2013 12:47 am

I come from both flEmish and Walloon families and honestly you should really run a spell checker or ask someone to read whatever you’ve written because it’s just painful to read your mistakes. As for Brussels, it’s the capital of Belgium, not flanders, not Wallonia. I think it should bilingual if not triligual. No one should have to adapt in the capital as Belgium is a trilangual city. AND Brussels is part of the flemish community so can you hardly blame them that they’re a bit ticked off when people treat you badly or don’t know both languages when they’re working in a store? I always find that if you try to speak the language the other person is speaking they will appreciate you much more for it. Both should adapt as best as they can to make the situation easier. You call other people extremists, but what are you? You’ve just called the British and the Americans stupid and assholes, so to me you just sound like an ignorant guy that can’t support his arguments.

    • Stéphanie / Apr 19 2013 7:51 am

Learn your history, bro… We had to fight hard to make Dutch an official language, and now you are saying that we are all racists? Just stupid. You, and others like you, are really the reason why north and south don’t get along.

But in addition, I loved the article. It made me laugh! It’s just sad when you can’t laugh with your own country ;).

        1. that is a good advise for most people posting here.
        2. Belgium is full of people who are doing just fine, ruining the country without help. Have you ever seen the state of the highways? A third world country would be ashamed.
        3. obviously you are the one having a hard time. Not being able to take criticism or having any sense of humour.

    • Lien / Apr 19 2013 12:46 pm

Whoa, so much hate against the Flemish speaking part of Belgium.
No need for that man, we’re all Belgians after all.
Although I must say I do agree with what “anonyme” said about having to understand that for Flemish speaking people it is frustrating to go to a store in a Flemish part of Belgium (not even only in Brussels) and not being able to be served in they’re own language, which is a right here in Belgium. More so it’s actually lawfully listed that if you work in a store any part of Belgium you should be able to serve your customers in the language of that part of the country. And lets be honest if you come to Flanders you will mostly be served in French but if we go to Wallonië we are a lot less likely to be served in Dutch right? Right, you know why this is? Well it’s quite simple, in fFlanders we are obligated to learn french as our second language in school, whereas in Wallonië the second language is to be chosen between Dutch and English. I must admit, I’d choose English too.
This is a country with a bilingual capital city, I think it’s only normal to be able to speak both languages when you live in Brussels. So instead of bickering about what language and part is better we’d probably be better off just knowing them both.

That’s too bad you didn’t talk about the Grand Place of Brussels (amongst the many other things you “forgot”). I have a good sense of humour and I love to make fun of our weirdness (as do a lot of ppl here – self derision is pretty much a national hobby), but you were rather aggressive in your article (which is misleading if it is supposed to be funny). Plus this kind of humour works when you actually know the place, which you obviously don’t.
One last thing, if you ever taste real belgian fries, you will be sorry for ever making fun of them (works for the fries and mussels too), they are delicious. And so thinks all the tourists here, just so you know it is objective.
At least we don’t live in a country where every animal is a menace! 😉

I think this is a bunch of foreign clichés of Belgium trown toghetter in a nice writing. But the writer does not have a clue about belgium (wich is not bad, a lot of belgians have neighter (;)).

Belgium is a strange surreal country, occupied by foreign countries for millenia (romans, germans, french, austrians, spanish, dutch) therefor it took culture of all over the world and mixed it with its own original dietch culture (also the base of the dutch and luxembourgh culture btw). What is typical is that while we did not have a federal gouverment for almost a year (we had 6 other local gouverments) we still managed to keeps things rolling. While there are tensions between different cultural groups, there has never been a war, and the chance that it gets to war is very little to be honest. We belgians are closed minded, not so social and very hypocrite (everybody avoid taxes, but cusses his neighbour when doing it also for instance) but still got strong in the EU (one of the most solid economy’s and heavy influence on the political level)

I like being a belgian, and think the country is in all it’s hypocrisy and surealism, still one of the nicest countries to live in. I would not want to live in the US or the UK for sure, and i know most people from those countries who lived here once that i know, stay here for always or at least a very long period. You ask why and they answer is miles ahead better than their own country to live in…

Only an Antwerp citizen could of told you that ; they are usually referred to as ” big-headeds” by the rest of flemish population (cause you should know that of course – true Belgian style – there’s a huge rivalry between Flemish towns and regions too) 😉

    • Brabo / Apr 18 2013 10:52 pm

Antwerp is the capital of Flanders.

      Source: I’m from Antwerp

      • Wart De Bever / Apr 19 2013 10:05 am

This source isn’t really reliable, inhabitants of Antwerp are known for thinking they are at the center of the universe. On of their famous sayings goes like this: “Antwerp city and the rest is parking lot. (” Antwerpen stad en de rest is parking.”)

you really must have had a hard time in Belgium to hate it so much…this piece is pretty pathetic

    • Esn / Apr 19 2013 10:59 am

A lot of foreigners have had a hard time in Belgium. You people are one of the most unwelcoming, unfriendly, insecure, backstabbing people in the world. I have lived in many countries, but this was an absolute nightmare. You are racist and unfriendly. It is better to considder your own mistakes and figure out a way to improve, than shoot down the person who is pointing out the mistakes. But that is also typical Belgian. They’d rather shoot the messenger, than recieve the message.

      • neiltheseal85 / Apr 19 2013 11:05 am

Thanks for standing up for me but this comment is just really mean. Despite what we have seen in the comments here Belgians are really friendly people

      • Blossom / Apr 19 2013 3:24 pm

Esn, have you been in Antwerp? Your name is the same one as the name of the student’s association that welcomes the Erasmus exchange students that come to Antwerp.
If not: where have you been? It seems you are extremely bitter about us, belgians, I’m wondering why. As far as I know and have seen, we are extremely friendly to foreign exchange students, as well as the people coming to Belgium on holidays, so it strikes me as being very odd that you had such a rough time being here.
Unless you yourself were annoying to us and did stupid things you wouldn’t even begin to think about in your own country, I don’t think anyone would have treated you as bad as you described…

      • Esn / Apr 19 2013 4:57 pm

@Blossom , I have lived in Antwerp for one year. In the 90’s. I have lived in Brussels in the 80’s. I have lived in Wallon (which was actually ok experience) My work and my studies have taking me all over the world. Never did I have a problem adapting and making friends. Usually I have my calender full with dinner dates in the first month to make new friends.

I was studying in Antwerp, but I came independantly. After studying in Holland. My family is a mix of German, Dutch, Indonesian and French. Nice international mix. And tell you what. Some of my ancestors are from Belgium, like a lot of the Dutch have some Belgian ancestry because of the massive migrations to the north in the past. And I was really looking forward to going there. Connecting with some ancient roots. But from day one the Antwerp people made clear I was not welcome.

First day in school, when I spoke to a teacher he really insulted me because of my partly Dutch background. Most of my life I have lived in Denmark, Holland, my mum is german, I have lived in germany, so I am confused about my nationality. I have always considered myself European. But I start to consider myself more and more Dutch, partly because of my experiences in Belgium. And because I feel very welcome and at home in Holland. I have lived in Rotterdam, where I felt welcome and now I live in Amsterdam, where i do not fin any exclusion, racism or whatever.

Anyway, I am not bitter, I am seriously traumatised, especially becasue of my time in Antwerp. Becasue of my accent, that is rather like a Holland accent, since I did go to school there for a while, I was classified as Dutch. I have a german passport, but hey I look foreign (sometimes they would call me marokakker? ) I sound Dutch, so I was an outsider, not allowed in. I joined several student clubs and fraternities. Trying hard to fit in.
I only managed to make friendship with other foreign students. That was not my wish. But I could not connect with the Antwerp people.
Teacher would have no problem insulting Dutch students (But I am German!) And that went a lot further than just joking or teasing. Some teacher even expressed the wish that the Dutch should leave. And they were serious. I left from the optional classes, but some were mandatory.

Finding a place to live, as soon as they found out that I was not Belgian, I was no longer a candidate. I eventually found a house from a Marokakker landlord.

Applying for jobs on the phone was hopeless. ” Are you Nollander?” ” No I am german.” We don’t hire Hollanders.” They were not even ashamed to say this. I eventually found work at an illegal casino ran by an Italian. After a few months I learned to mimic the Antwerp accent, not themost charming accent in the area. But I noticed how disrespectful they were to fellow Flemish from West-Flanders, so I thought it best to blend in.
I was sick and tired of being send out of cafees for being hollander ( I am germaaaaaaaan) .
When I applied on the phone to get a job my Antwerp accent was good enough to get my invited to the office. Then my skin and hair colour would prevent me from getting work. And they had no problem letting me know foreigners were not welcome, so I stayed with the Italian job.

Do you know what it is like to ask somebody a question in a polite way? And the get ignored, like you are invisble, these things can happen anywhere, the train station, a shop, frietkot.

Funny enough I am not bitter, but I am angry sometimes, because something that should have been a good time, got fucked up by a whole bunch of narrow minded people. I have never experienced this kind of unfriendlyness.

For a while I was driving a Belgian car. Nobody would expect this, but driving in Belgium with a foreign licence plate is different. Belgian drivers will cut you off, push you out of a lane, not give you any slack or space. It is less aggresive when I drive Belgian plates. What is the dislike with the Dutch?

And I am not the only one. Some of collegues have studied in Belgium and confirm my stories. I know lady who is considering moving out of Belgium, because everything takes extra effort as soon as they figure out she is Dutch. She is trying to find a place in the Hasselt area, and cannot find anything. There are places, but they’s rather leave it empty then rent out to her.

From my old landlord a Maroccan, I know the Belgians take racism to a whole new level. He used to live in France and is thinking of returning. I am still in touch with him. Yeah I must be a very nasty person for my landlord to be still in touch with me more than 15 years later.

So here it is, just some examples of the bad shit the Belgians pulled on me or people I know.

I could write for pages, but hey I think I already over did it.

I do have some Belgian friends, they confirm my stories and are apolegetic for their fellow Flemish. They share my opinion that in general the Flemish are not very friendly to strangers, not very welcoming and petty and childish in their attitude and behaviour towards the Dutch.

It is obvious that not everybody is the same and in an intelligent discussion you don’t need to state the obvious right? I know there are exeptions and some Belgians are lovely.

Stating that I did something to deserve this treatment is exactly what I mean, Belgians don’t take criticism very well. I point out a problem and you force me to explain that more people can testify that they had this problem.

I normally am a soft spoken, quiet person, but not shy at all. Everywhere I go I find it easy to connect with collegues or fellow students.
Only in Flanders it has been hard.

I see a small change for the better in the last few years working there every once in a while (when I get send to Flanders). Young people are more open minded and tend to play and work together very nicely, but there is almost always friction with the older people.

I am ready for new good experiences. And they do happen, but still……….. It is quite something that I cherish and celebrate every good experience.
        Every interaction should be nice.

        • Milan / Apr 25 2013 3:02 am

I feel bad about you having to go through this, but without wanting to point any fingers, Antwerp is probably the worst place you could be if you to blend in. It’s (generally speaking) very divided, even racist (Bart De Wever was elected mayor there. What did you expect?) and obnoxiously arrogant. A part of them looks down upon the rest of Belgium, especially West Flanders and Limburg, and think of themselves as superior. While this is not even close to the majority, it IS enough to ruin it for the rest of them.

Next time you visit, try another one of the large cities. I personally suggest Ghent, because i know it, and i know they’re very open towards different cultures and, because it’s mostly a student city, they are very welcoming.

Just don’t be that guy who judges an entire population on a single bad experience in a single city. That’s exactly the narrow mindedness that caused the problematic situation concerning racism and intolerance in our country.

          Milan

        • neiltheseal85 / Apr 25 2013 3:06 am

        • Thomas / Jun 23 2013 9:40 pm

Look that was in the 90’s … that was 20 YEARS AGO people change.. today antwerp is a city that threats foreign people as one of them offcourse there are racists.. they are everywhere in every country in the world but for example on my school in borgerhout 40 % of the students are foreign and i am friends with them and i threat them as if they lived here for hundreds of years.

      • Blossom / Apr 19 2013 5:15 pm

While now you’re talking about the older ones, my mother is an older one I guess, and she is extremely friendly to everyone, even if they have ‘another color’.
There are, obviously, people who don’t trust foreigners because they have been in situations where they had no other choice. Those people, however, do not represent everyone living here.

Agreed, if what you wrote is true, than you haven’t been meeting the friendliest of us, but still there is no need for hate speeches about Belgium and everything and everyone in it.
You wrote that you are ready for new good experiences, I am pretty sure they will come. However, they won’t be coming your way if your attitude radiates your feelings of hate and disgust towards belgians, based on your previous encounters, as it does now.

If you really want to meet and connect with belgians, you might wanna try to have a clear and open mind. That way, new experiences will have the chance to reach you…

Well I am myself not Belgian but my husband and children are and despite not having known too much of Belgium before I met him I cant think of a nicer country, honest! I am so absolutely impressed with the integration of different languages and not dubbing TV but keeping in original language with subtitles. This is the best environment for anyone to grow up in and I envy them! I pity mainly English countries that do not get that opportunity to be fluent in different languages, have great health care, free education and some of the best foods as well as the most amount of Michelin star rating restaurants per capita. I have never seen better manicured lawns ( sorry to the English here) and Belgians are on par with the south Americans to fully enjoy their life, better than English, Germans, Swiss, etc. The food is always fresh and they dont have crap like fast food that most people eat often and serve their children- I mean seriously how many fat persons do you see there- hardly ever because they respect food, themselves, their appearance and their living environment. Every country has its ups and downs but doesn’t everyone say the grass is always greener on the other side.
Tell us Neil- when was the last time you visited this lovely country?
And just for your information I am German, live in Bahamas, Studied in the US and Canada, worked in Mexico, Curacao and other Caribbean countries and visited at least another 20 countries outside of this list and wouldn’t be able to write with such a naive perspective.

  73. Melimelo_die / Apr 18 2013 9:10 pm

what a success, over 160 comments in less than 24h, that’s a buzz. I saw on other parts of your blog that you actually really like belgium, that you came several time and think it’s “under rated”, but it’s not really what anyone could understand at first as reading your article. It just looks like you hate that country… I know the blog is called “pethates” – what else should we expect^^ – but still, i wonder. I know you tried to be ironic, funny and you aimed to target autralian people, but why didn’t you talk about what you also liked in Belgium ? that would see less “agressive”. I read some of the comments, i feel so sorry you’ve been insulted that way. I always thought belgians have that typical sense of self-mockery, but it looks like some are only self-centered… I wasn’t 10 min ago, but after reading those people, i just feel so ashamed beeing belgian…

    • weebee / Apr 18 2013 10:25 pm

ashamed?? why? see it as some kind of defensive attitude. Like a said before some people do feel offended because Belgium is always seen as boring and dull. We’re the underdog, the little brother, the nerd in your classroom, an easy target, always have been… well maybe that’s the place we love to be. Not in the middle of all attention like the rest of the world which all look like “Yoyo Gansta-bling wanna be’s” with no personality.
The fact that there are so many belgians who react, that means that there still are peeps who are proud and don’t want to hear all this negative chitchat about their country. You have to admit that in such a short time a lot of Belgians have seen your blog and responded. not always very friendly but that’s what you get when you leak on someones head.
Could you imagine what kind of hatemail you would have received if you would have done the same with another country, let’s say the US? Lot’s of crap to say about them too, even more. But that counts for every country in the world. I knew a guy who lived down under for a year, he was chief of some kind of pharmaceutical firm but he couldn’t get used to it overthere. He called the aussies dumb, so dumb. there lazy and watch porn all day during officehours… so you tell us that belgians are strange…
I think everybody is different what makes them strange, makes the world interesting to life in, not?

    • Beglian / Apr 19 2013 10:19 am

there’s a huge difference between self-mockery and somebody who tries to make fun at us…

  75. Filippo / Apr 18 2013 9:28 pm

OMG I read the comments and I think that many people here have no sense of humor what-so-ever. Guys get a grip and laugh about it….many people could write similar things about other countires too…do not take it too persoanlly otherwise you prove the guy right!!!!!

I enjoyed reading the piece as it made me laugh. It is obviosuly a caricature of the place but it got some points right. I have been living in Brussels for almost 10 years and I (sorry to dissent guys) find it quite boring and ugly. Apart form the Grand Place, which is a beautiful square (mind you there are many other countries in Europe full of magnificinet squares and mionuments i.e. France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Czech Republic, Hungary and I could go on).

On the other hand I think that Brugge is pretty and so are both Gent and Antwerp.

I disagree with many of the comments…whereas it is true that Belgium produces great beers, it is not true that Belgium is at the base of the EU. The European Communities (first came ECSC and EURATOM) were created to bring together once again France and Germany after the war and Brussels was picked as official seat of some of the EC institutions only because (Belgian do not take it badly) its proximity to the two big partners and to avoid problems between the two. The “capital” could have not been assigned to any of them; so Brussels was chosen instead. it was solely a political compromise……

Musical festival are everywhere and even better ones like Glastonbury festivals in the UK (one of the biggest in Europe) or Oxegen in Ireland.

The health system is ok but far away from being amazing (the amazing ones are in germany and in the Nordic countries….not in Belgium).

In Belgium there is a chronical lack of customer service. Wherever you go (especially in Brussels and Wallonia), shops, restaurants, banks, bars, the standard of the service is pretty bad. It seems that shop keepers, bar tenders, waiters etc. look at you as they are there doing you a favour. Nobody is able to do their work properly and the service in general is shit. And that is the same for almost all of the trade sector (including utilities such as telephone, tv, electricity and so on).

I could keep going on and on….the differences between me and all of you (including the writer of the piece) is that I’m an expat living in Brussels for almost 10 years and I am more objective than all of you Belgians that do not see the probelms with your country. All the people that posted comments seem not to be seeing the elephant in the room! Get a grip lads!

78. sven / Apr 18 2013 10:50 pm

this zone on the map of the world and its inhabitants may appeal strange to you, but is special cause of its place in the pherical coordinate system and his various influences. Lots of different influences makes richness to the brain and species. check your history.

  79. snavelaarorgelwaar / Apr 18 2013 11:17 pm

As a guy called Julius Caesar once wrote: Horum omnium Belgae fortissime sunt. Ghent for instance was one of the biggest cities of Europe during the middle ages, even bigger than London. America wasn’t even discovered yet at that moment. And we could go on and on and on. The topic of “making fun of small countries” has been done before and has been done better. I still remember a guy who had a site “Belgium doesn’t exist”, which was a hundred times funnier than the cliché stuff you wrote. When you want to write funny articles, you need to check your facts first of all and more important: try to be original. Take that as a constructive comment from a Belgian citizen.

    • Johan / Apr 19 2013 9:26 am

What your Latin teacher apparently forgot to mention was that the “Belgae” he was referring too were people living in the north of France. So sad that even that is not a compliment to us! 😀 😀 😀

      • snavelaarorgelwaar / Apr 19 2013 2:25 pm

I can’t believe the amount of (very lengthy) comments on this post! It seems that while Belgians make a national pasttime out of self deprecation, foreigners can’t make a few silly jokes without being crucified. The replies are not even calm and well-reasoned; they’re heated insults with name calling. Don’t people realise it’s tongue in cheek?! There are even comments trying to prove the that Belgium is not boring….uh…the author picked those things because of how interesting and surprising they are; the title isn’t meant to be taken seriously. Sheesh!

    • Johan / Apr 19 2013 9:30 am

It doesn’t have to be linked to our nationality. If a same article would have been written about any other country, 90% of the people would be offended, 10% would have a laugh. It shows what percentage of the population have enough humor (or brains, whatever you want to call it) to see the irony/sarcasm in it.

The opening of the article with Collin Farrell’s quote says everything: in the movie he dislikes Bruges and indeed refers to it as “fucking Bruges”. Truth is he got engaged there and absolutely loved the city! 😉

  82. Zaza / Apr 19 2013 7:32 am

damn what a retard that wrote this article..-_- you’re talking about the things that every tourist knows.. When you write an article like that, you should make that:
    1. Antwerp isn’t the capital of the flemish part (although some of the Antwerp people may think it is)
    2. Belgium has over 80000 protected monuments, so if you talk about history; please mention some facts that are interesting.. (who cares about the monument in Antwerp, when you have places like Ieper that were crucial during the world war..) And you may not forget the big role that Belgium has played in Arts; From the fifteenth century till now it has the ‘vlaamse primitieven’, Antwerp that WAS the centrum of many artists who lived there in the sixteenth century and further.. Rubens, Rembrand, Bosch, Bruegel, Dürer,..
    3. People that live in Belgium may seem boring, untill you get to know them (like British people are the most social, entertaining people in the world, yeah right…)

oh yeah, and the Atomium, the ‘indescribable large silver monument of sticks and balls’, as you described it; it was built for the expo 58 and normally it had to be demolished after the expo but because of the many tourists that this monument attracted, the atomium stayed there.

You may write these things about Belgium, but then you just admit that you are one witless person that thinks he’s interesting by telling such things..

  84. Grace Gibson / Apr 19 2013 8:00 am

Actually, a fairly uneducated article…. Brussels is the capitol of the European Union so the EU must have thought there was something valuable about the real estate. In addition the historical symbol of Brussels is the angel Michael with his foot on the serpent with a spear or sword through his neck! Impressive, to say the least. I can see that you also don’t have much interest in art or history.

    http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_St_Michael_the_Archangel_the_patron_saint_of

Whoever thought of the mannekin piss and proclaimed it as the symbol of the city is a mystery to me.
Sounds like to me, you have never bothered to venture much outside of your hotel room, if you ever really did visit the city, or perhaps your article just came from a short “google” search. After all, isn’t google the final authority on everything…. ????

    • Esn / Apr 19 2013 11:04 am

brussels was made EU capital to save the city and the country. To help the Belgians, because they do not produce enough to keep the country affloat financially. Before the EU became important Brussels was a run down shit hole. I lived there in the 80’s

  85. narinnamkn / Apr 19 2013 9:49 am

that’s a low-level point of knowledge about Belgium !!! U just need to visit Leuven, Brugge, Gent , try Belgian Kriek (Although the exact number is disputed, Belgium makes over 800 different beers. Belgians drink an average of 150 litres of beer per year per person.), u forgot (or evidently, u have no idea) about statue to The Saxophone (The saxophone was invented in Belgium, in the early 1840′s by Adolphe Sax (1814-1894), in the city of Dinant), moreover In 1066, Huy, Belgium became the first European city to receive a charter of rights, making it the oldest free city on the continent, Belgium produces 220,000 tons of chocolate per year. That’s about 22kg of chocolate per person in Belgium, luckily Belgians don’t eat all of that chocolate. The Brussels’ International Airport is the World’s biggest chocolate selling point, A 2007 European Report stated Belgium has the lowest salary gap between men and women in the EU after Malta. Belgium has the highest proportion of female ministers in the world (55% in 2000) and was one of the first to have a female parliamentarian, in 1921, Belgium has the highest density of roads and railroads in the world. It is the country with the 3rd most vehicles per square kilometre after the Netherlands and Japan. Because of the quantiy of lights, the Belgian highway system is the only man-made structure visible from the moon at night, Spa, Belgium is home to Europe’s first modern health resort, opened in the 18th century and Europe’s first casino, “la Redoute”, opened in 1763, Belgium was the scene of Napoleon’s final defeat, at Waterloo, south of Brussels, Nemo33, in Brussels, is the world’s deepest swimming pool, reaching 35 metres in depth. It is a practice ground for scuba divers, In the 15th century, Belgians were credited with inventing oil painting. 🙂

    • Esn / Apr 19 2013 11:09 am

The Belgian highway system used to be visible from the moon. Nowadays large portions of the highway is not illuminated anymore. That was the reason why it was visible. Now the roads are not only badly lit, the quality is on the level of a third world country. Combined with the crazy behaviour of the average Belgian driver, makes it very dangerous to drive. The numbers dont lie, Belgium has the highest rate of deaths in traffic in the whole north of Europe. Traffic situation is comparable to Greece.

      • narinnamkn / Apr 19 2013 3:46 pm

So, except roads with the rest u, I guess, agreed !!! 😀

I guess I do. Impressive especially the pool.

    Hey,
You really should travel in Belgium. You ask why to people who goes there but I promise you they’ll have an explanation why they come back!
PS: You should really travel much more, it does seem you haven’t left your village for years; staying in front of a computer is nothing about travel.
ps²: We have a national sport “la balle Pelotte” Go check on that douche!

    • Esn / Apr 19 2013 11:25 am

I thought this article was spot on! And if I would have written an article it would have been much nastier. I have lived in Belgium several times, worked in Belgium, been a tourist in Belgium. Belgium is nice when you can avoid the Belgians. Because in general you are not nice and not welcoming to strangers.

You are opinionated, over-sensitive to jokes (as is proved extensively here in the comments) You dont like yourselves very much, but get very pissed off when others point out your failures (and I could make a long list) You constantly exclude foreigners, right wing parties are rather big. The governement is constantly trying to find ways to make life hard for foreigners and you complain all the time about how people from neighbouring countries are taking advantage of your country. You whine and complain so much. You are in the victim-modus all the time. It is the Calimero-syndrom. Because you are small you think everybody is out to get you, while in fact most people from surrounding countries love you. But you dont deserve that love because you are so mean to foreigners.
You are discreet about that dislike. You smile in everybody’s face, but your thoughts are not so friendly. You seem polite. Good for you most people don’t see through that fake friendlyness. But if you live in Belgium long enough, you will find out just how deep the friendship and friendlyness goes.

A lot of Belgians dont like the Belgian attitude, the hypocrisy. They leave the country and flower and blossom in a less oppressive environment.

When you travel through Belgium, you will find that 90 percent of the houses are locked off with metal or plastic shutters, like a castle ready for war. That truly demonstrates the Belgian psyche.

But I have news for you, you dont have to hide, most people mean you well. You dont have to be so freaking defensive. It is ok. The world is not your enemy. Grow up and grow a sense of humour.

      • Maite / Apr 19 2013 12:59 pm

Bulshit Esn! My door is always open. And I’m very open to strangers. I even raise one 😉 Am I not Belgian then???

      • Kyliebling / Apr 19 2013 1:13 pm

My god, you keep blowing my mind! The lenghts you will go to to shit on Belgium and it’s inhabitants.. Not the article, but YOU are what is most offensive and hateful about this whole blog. Streetlights in Belgium where brought down to a minimum because of both ecological and budgetary reasons. I’m sorry you had to live anywhere in the ’80’s. From what i hear, most big cities – or shit holes as you like to call them – were struggling with overconsumption and growth in general at that point in time. As the author of the article pointed out, his text was at least meant to be funny, not offensive towards belgium or belgians. You on the other hand… Fuck, you are some piece of work. I can’t shake the feeling that you are a bitter and hateful asshat who really didn’t have a very good time in Belgium when you were here and now wants to ruin it for everyone else. I’m sorry if you maybe lost your job in Belgium or to a Belgian, i’m sorry if you perhaps had a belgian girlfriend who broke up with you because you are apparently a FULLBLOWN ASSHOLE, and i’m very sorry about that belgian dove who may have shat on your favourite sweater that time you were here as a tourist, BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, KEEP YOUR HATEFUL, FRUSTRATED SHIT TO YOURSELF. I feel sorry for the country you are in now and i would politely ask you to refrain from further posting here or anywhere else on the Internet for that matter, ..EVER! Thanks.

      • Louis87 / Apr 19 2013 2:11 pm

I have to agree with you on the part of us not being very welcoming. I can imagine we are not always very open towards new people. We don’t greet each other on the streets. I’ don’t even know my own neighbors…
But that doesn’t necessarily mean we are unfriendly. We just need some time to get to know someone and we don’t like it when people come on too strong. But i think once we get to know a person, we are very social.
For example: I was in New York last week and it’s true what they say about New Yorkers, they are indeed very friendly. And everybody asks you how you’re doing, which is nice. But of course they’re not interested in your well-being, in fact they don’t even expect an answer. So it’s a bit too fake for me. Then I’d rather shut up and have 1person who’s genuinely interested in talking to me than a 100others. But that’s maybe a cultural thing.
Anyway, I’m very sorry you hate us so much. I don’t know what kind of Belgians you met but i think and hope they’re not representative for all of us.
        btw, you’re Spanish, right?

      • Esn / Apr 19 2013 3:10 pm

Kyliebling, it was your extremely defensive nasty comment on this harmless blog that dislogged my comments. You Belgians always act holier than holy while shitting on other peoples heads. And when people call you out on bad or unfriendly or weird behaviour, you scream bloody murder, like some one is doing bad to you.

As for your speculations about what happened, it is not one incident, and don’t lift one sentence from it’s context and blow it out of proportion, cause then it will be an endless discussion that is going nowhere, just like Belgium.

You have to blame your own response to the blog as the fire starter to my comments. You are so agressive. And you are so ignorant to your own faults. I could not control myself.

Problem with you Belgians, you think you are so nice and well mannered but you are not.
In total I have lived in Belgium for 4 years Throughout my life. I have lived in many different countries and when I compare, there is n , ot a place more unwelcoming to foreigners. Especially Antwerp, where I lived in the 90’s.
It might surprise you to hear that the only place where I had a good time in Belgium was in a village near Han sur Lessewhere I lived for a while. But the Flemish. …. And I know a lot of people who have lived in Belgium and left because they felt really unwelcome. So you can be angry with me for expressing my opinion based on experience in your country. Or you can think that being nice might change my opinion. All you did was confirm what I already thought.
        – You cannot deal with criticism
        – You dont know how to have a rational debate
        – You rather bite off the head of the person delivering a message of critique than adressing the problem behind it.

Recently I have been working a lot in Belgium, and things are not as bad as they used to, but they still are super unfriendly to foreigners. Jealous of the successes of others especially foreigners and petty about it.

Kyliebling you can call me names for expressing my opinion, based on my many experiences in your country. Be really rude, go ahead, I am happy that the smily facade, the quiet rudeness is gone and you are showing the true colours with your cursewords and nasty comments.

You just added one more reason to avoid Flanders. You call me angry and frustrated but you are the one who cannot remain calm and civil. I think you are the one who is angry and frustrated.

Like many more people are saying: Relax, grow a sense of humour and learn how to accept criticism.

You guys are suffering from the calimero-complex. Because you are small you assume other countries think you are insignificant and out to get you. While in reality, all surrounding countries love your country and it’s people.
Even I still do. Because my parents brought me up to believe Belgium is a lovely place with gentle people.
Unfortunately every time too many Belgians proved my parents wrong. And strangely enough, still deep in my heart I have positive feelings for your country. But people like you make it really hard to like the country.

        • The stupid belgian / Oct 14 2015 9:00 am

You are racist and put everyone on the same bag… more than 11 millions peoples in Belgium. Did you meet all of them ?

So sorry my friend but I like criticism, when its intelligent. Here, in this article there is nothing based on objective sens. Just a frustrated guy with is trip to Belgium. You didn’t like Antwerpen. Too bad for you. I know other foreigners who likes it. Maybe the problem was coming from you instead of the most of 11 millions of Belgians.

P.S.: Im not nice to you and I totally don’t care about it, like I totally don’t care about your feeling about Belgium. No like, then no coming back then.

        • neiltheseal85 / Oct 14 2015 9:08 am

Wow, I really hit a nerve with you. I’m sorry I offended you so much with my articles, maybe Australian humour doesn’t translate well.

I don’t remember saying that Belgians we’re racist or that I didn’t like the place – I do like Belgium and have been three times. I plan on going again when I can afford it.

I’m sorry you didn’t feel welcome in Australia, where did you go? We can be hard to get along with at first.

You’re right about our racism, we have a horrible past and it is still around today unfortunately. Although did you meet all of us? Not all Australians are racist.

      • Blossom / Apr 19 2013 3:50 pm

Well, Esn, no offense, but what you are saying is like saying that every black guy is a rapist, hits women, has aids and fucks little children to cure him from it.

You do NOT have all the facts about the people in Belgium. I am willing to believe that you ran into some people that weren’t very friendly to you at that time, I’m also willing to believe that the way you behaved had something to do with it.
If you approached belgian people with sentences drowning in hate and with a preoccupied mind as to thinking we are all stupid and unwelcoming, I’m pretty sure no one really liked or trusted you, because no one in their right mind would.
If that is not the case and you were always the friendliest, coolest person to be around, you probably ran into the wrong belgians, just as it is possible to run into the wrong americans, the wrong germans, … To conclude that every belgian person is the same is really very stupid.

      • BenDover / Apr 19 2013 4:18 pm

As a Belgian, I can appreciate this article. But comments like these I do find very offending, how can one person be so full of hatred against an entire country and all of its inhabitants? I have always thought of myself as an open, friendly and caring person. I have travelled a lot, have several foreign friends who have always been more then welcome here (and vice versa) I am flemish, live near the language border and get along very well with the French speaking Belgians. I don’t do backstabbing or shitting on other peoples heads. This is not an opinion, this is blind hatred towards people you have never met.

      • Esn / Apr 19 2013 5:23 pm

once more: I have lived in Belgium for several years. I still travel there on a regular basis for work. The first year I lived there I was very exited and happy to move there. Very open minded and ready for a good experience. It is typical to assume it is my fault, while in every other country where I Iived and worked I never had any problems fitting in and getting along. I have a long very long list of bad experiences, pages full. And still I return every once in a while because I remain optimistic.

I have a few Belgian friends who are the exeption and lovely open minded people.
But I challenge you to do a survey amongst foreigner and ask about what image the have of belgium before they came (probably good) , the experience they had and the difference between their expereince and what the belgians think of themsleves. There might be a shockingly large gap.

I am coming from a whole bunch of experiences.

        • Defeated / Nov 18 2017 8:50 am

I’m in my 4th year in Belgium and have tried so hard to accept much of what you’ve said. It’s got to the point where it’s not worth it anymore. It’s a shame. I love this place and its people are gentle, but the majority are also extremely unfriendly towards foreigners and I’ve had enough. I should probably have left after a year, but refused to give up. Now, I’m heartbroken, but looking forward to a chance at happiness somewhere else in the next few months. I thought the UK was hard place to get by until I had been here a little while. I’ll always love Belgium, but it’s been pretty unkind to me and made me feel like I’ll always be a stranger if I stay.

  88. Eva Dalving / Apr 19 2013 10:10 am

Belgium may indeed, like every other country in the world have her contradictions and her strange ways. The culture and rich heritage we offer however, make her inevitalby one of the most interessting and mind blowing countries you will ever be in. Ofcourse you need the cultural and opened minded background to be able to appreciate it. We, however tiny, do things OUR way and do what we can not to follow the mass… this could shock or disappoint those who only look for just that in every holiday and every country they visit. It’s hard not being offended while reading this but my offence has turned to a huge: I FEEL SO SORRY FOR YOU! you totally missed the point!!

  89. me_belgian_too / Apr 19 2013 11:43 am

Belgian politics and structure are surreal so Inspector Clouseau would be the ideal person to narrate the history of Belgium, I would be LMAO. Enjoyed the article. Belgium is indeed a very strange place, but it does have it charms.
Belgium has a lot to offer, if only we could stop the bickering. The man, Georges Lemaître, who first proposed the Big Bang theory (not the TV series) was Belgian. Belgium is also know for its cartoonists. Someone mentioned Herge, but he is so overrated. Franquin (with Guust Flater), Willy Vandersteen (Suske en Wiske, early work), Edgar P. Jacobs (Blake & Mortimer), Yves Swolfs (Durango), Hermann (Jeremiah), Marvano (The Forever War based on Joe Haldeman’s novel), … are much better.

I’m Belgian so when a friend posted a link to this post on his Facebook wall I was intrigued. I don’t mind a good laugh so when I started reading I thought ‘Haha, funny’. However about half way through the post I felt offended. I’m not sure if the author of this post has been to Belgium. If you have I’m sorry you obviously had a bad experience.

At the start of your post you say it’s hard to find a Belgian who is proud to be from Belgium. I would beg to differ. And if that indeed were true then let me be the only Belgian who’s very proud to be from this little corner of the world. Thank you very much.

You my flamish friend thinks that, but in brussels, 95% of the population speak french, and no one of them will say that brussels is the capital of Flanders ! But anyway, fuck all these political shits and let’s drink beer together !

      • Philip Merrin / Mar 25 2014 9:41 pm

It’s not only French v Flemish, but the way Brussels a Flemish City had French forced on it’s inhabitants. It’s not as if the City is inhabited by Walloons, it isn’t. Most Flemish people HAD to adopt French if they wished to have a career. So 85% not 95% of people living in Brussels speak French as their language it’s a fact, but that doesn’t make it part of Wallonia at all. The Flemish government can see how many Brusselaers speak French but have traditionally Flemish names. They see people from the Congo, France and North Africa along with EEC officials and other of the worlds francophones, but not so many Walloon families at all. The Flemish Government are not about to give away part of their heritage, so just get used to it.

Brugges has its weird shaped chocolates! Oostende has a huuuuuuuge beach! Every city there has something different that catches your attention! And yes, the beers: Kriek – beer with cheries, Duvel, Palm, Satan, Delirium tremens – the one with pink elephants, Chimay, and so on…

Collin Farrel is used with other locations, I don’t think he spend too much time in Brugges for the movie, movie which was, in my opinion, very bad… But I watched it just to remember my time in Brugges and in Belgium!

I moved to Belgium from the UK on a whim, 14 years later I’m still here. Why? In one word – Liège. Fabulous city. The “boring” cliché staggers me every time, it’s a mad, fun, exhilerating country. But if you prefer the swinging hi-viz grey jobsworth petty rollercoaster UK life, be my guest.

  116. miauwington / Apr 20 2013 11:20 am

Jean-Claude Van Damme and nothing else ? Geee…Belgium is only 300 km wide and what we have is : the best chocolate, the best fries, the best cyclists, the best beer & hot chicks. Sure, only Van Damme. You can have him.
I just doubt it’s that much better to live in France, England, Germany or even the States. In terms of overall happiness I think it’s countries like Canada & New-Zealand that score best.
Because of its small size Belgium is more like an immensely varied metropole. Definitely not boring.
    But anyway, fun article.

  117. Nico / Apr 20 2013 4:48 pm

Hey there! I’m belgian and I have to say your text mad me laugh quite a lot. Although some of the things you say are untrue, for example the monks don’t take a vow of silence and the beer you’ve mentioned aren’t made by them. But in general it was really funny. Now I expect you to do the same for France for example. The country of self sufficients morons :). What’s fun with French is you can actually insult them all you like, they’ll never understand it if it’s not written “en français”!
    Cheers mate!

Hello, I’ve read your text and I just have one thing to say: do your research properly next time before you try to write something smart and funny because really it’s not. I could name a dozen statements that are just untrue.

Could you please “think” before writing an article about a whole country and categorizing its inhabitants in such miserable clichés and stereotypes? We can take jokes, it has nothing to do with that. You are here generalizing and mixing everything up, a bit easy behind a computer screen don’t you think?

Hi I’m from Belguim. Don’t know if you heard but the little shitty country you are talking about has some pretty amazing things like festivals:tomorrowland rock werchter,.. sport stars: Kim Clijsters Justin Henin, Philip Gilbert, Tom Boonen,.. and the belguim soccer team is 15th in the fifa world ranking! do some research before you write something like this!
and btw french fries are actually Belguim fries we invented them!

All those angry Belgians, but you know what I think might be the worst,
the fact that you have to read the same arguments over and over again,
french fries not being french, festivals, beers, Jan Fabre, etc
well I do absolutely not envy you…
I hope this doesn’t scare you into never setting foot in Belgium again, because as far as I’m concerned you, sir, are very welcome!

    • Greet / Apr 25 2013 3:11 am

Actually, Belgium is the youngest of those nations, as the country only came into existence in the early 19th century. It took quite a few years for a distinctive Belgian identity to develop itself among the new Belgians, too. Don’t let the name fool you; in the past, various regions and peoples have been called “Belgians” or variations thereof, but those regions never coincided with what is now Belgium. In the citation you mention, Caesar was talking about the Belgae, a group of Gallo-Germanic tribes who lived in an area overlapping that of the modern Belgium. They probably didn’t have much of a collective identity to speak of, and even if they did, in the following centuries so much happened (houses of rulers, wars, conquests, unions, etc) that it doesn’t even matter.

If you read that citation in its context, by the way, you will notice that by “fortissimi” Caesar probably meant something like “ferocious” or “savage” rather than “brave”.

      • Philip Merrin / Mar 25 2014 9:45 pm

That makes it a more mature nation than Germany which only came together as a nation 50 years after Belgium.

  135. EU-citizen / May 14 2013 2:26 pm

Written by somebody who eats fish and chips with vinegar in an old newspaper. In terms of culinary delights definitely the worst thing that happened to humanity. The tabloids show the intellectual state of the country that is mainly a forgotten island of the US in front of the EU. Finally the average beer without foam drinking moreon pays half of his year wage to attend his favourite soccer team every weekend. After fighting the other hooligans they amuse themselves to get hooked with the most ugly women in the hemisphere. Way to go!!!

    • neiltheseal85 / May 14 2013 2:28 pm

      • EU citizen / May 15 2013 7:58 am

Whos is badly informed now? This is all you know about Australia. Belgian people, are like in the jokes going around in Holland, not that smart after all. But that is not the Belgians fault. All the smart Belgians left the country to flea Roman Catholic oppression and the Spanish oppression. All the free thinkers, scolars and artist moved to more open minded areas of Europe. Mostly Holland I think…. well the Flemish did….I guess. Do not lecture me on the details. History is not my strongest topic. So please do NOT correct me if I am wrong. Becasue in the end nobody can be completely right about history. Since it has all been doctered and manipulated to suit the powers that be.

    • Iain / Jul 29 2013 10:56 am

Well, I am visiting Britain right now. And I must say you are also completely wrong and ignorant. Fish and Chips are delicious and a fuck of alot of people around the world agree with that so you are just dead wrong there… Also, I can assure you my ignorant Belgian friend, that British women are certainly NOT ugly. You would seriousely have to be blind to make a statement like that. OR you have just never been to Britain…Because it seems as though UK has an abnormally high ratio of good looking women. So you are wrong about that too.

    • Iain / Jul 29 2013 11:16 am

Also, Britain is still VERY important financially, politically and militarily around the world. By comparison, Belgium is nowhere near as big a player on the international level by a very long shot. Forgotten Island?? Ummmmmmm no, you have no idea what you’re talking about if you think that. The permanent members of the UN Security Council are Russia, France, USA, China…and……BRITAIN!!! You cannot be a member of this group and be considered a forgotten nation. Once again, Belgium falls easier under the category of forgotten. Although I have no disrespect for your country, that is simply true. Lastly……your full statement was….”Britain is mainly a forgotten island of the USA” ???? What does that even mean??? It doesn’t even make sense… You know Britain existed before the United States right? How the fuck is it a forgotten island of the United States? You question the intellectual state of Britain, but yet Britain is a more prosperous and powerful nation than almost every other European State(except maybe Germany) so where does that leave the rest of you as far as intellect? You’re the one who said it, not me.

P.S. Don’t worry, that lesson was free of charge for you….I could tell you desperately needed some education.

  136. Sarah / May 14 2013 7:53 pm

  139. Eli / May 30 2013 4:32 am

Living in Belgium with lots of international and Belgian friends I can only say: 100% correct. Apart from people living on the countryside, like east-vlanders etc, there is noone who is proud of that country. And how could you, nothing works. It feels like living in a third world country: the only country in western Europe without proper internet everywhere, the most fucked-up health system I have ever encountered (letting pregnant women abut to give birth wait for hours, sure (encountered that three times!), living is expensive (more so than in the UK, Germany or the Netherlands, and you get less for your money than in those wonderful countries..). I can honestly say that I have not met anyone who is truly happy to live there. In fact, all my friends want to leave the country asap.

  140. Brad / May 30 2013 5:54 am

I think Colin Ferrell, you and everyone else are down right inside the box morons. Belgium is one of the best countries in Europe and the world. It’s home to many Trappist breweries and the monks aren’t the only folks making some of the worlds best ales as there are many breweries in Belgium doing it better than just about everyone else outside of the best in America. Belgium is a beautiful country with lonely people. Hell, they are even fielding a pretty good football(soccer) team lately with class players. Belgium has more to offer than what this article gives credit to. Or even Colin Ferrell. I mean who really gives a damn what Mr Ferrel thinks anyway? Idk about everyone else but he’s one of the last people I’d take travel and exploring advice from. More of what some celebrity says is the truth bull shit. Then again I’m not one to read up on what the who’s who are doing or even what they care about. Shut up and make your movies, save the whales or whatever it is you people do. Leave the good things in life to those who appreciate it. Give me a fine Brasserie Fantome Farmhouse ale from Belgium and give me time with my family and I’m happy. The finer things in life are more than just flashy toys and big city lights. Belgium is one of those finer things in life. As is Germany, England, Scotland and Spain. Just another pissed off Irishman I suppose is what Colin Ferrell is.

    • Brad / May 30 2013 6:31 am

I should say, ” everyone else” as you referred to it in your article as in you and Colin Ferrell speak for everyone’s opinion or everyone bases their opinion on Mr. Ferrell’s

  141. rick / Jun 2 2013 12:25 pm

The country is complicated but the people are great the countryside is beautiful. Some of the most beautiful places in europe are Namur and Brugges and Brussels and many other villages. But I lived there one year and have many friends there. The Taxes suck and the government is confusing but sometimes i wish the US went without a govt for several years and just kept the laws already on the books.

  142. nocya / Jun 9 2013 5:38 am

That’s it, I’m sick of all this “Antwerp is the capital of Flanders” shit. Flanders doesn’t have a capital neither does Wallonia, it’s all one country with Brussels as the capital, thank you. (I’m belgian btw)

    • Philip Merrin / Mar 25 2014 9:56 pm

So you don’t agree with the regions, but there’s little point in being in self-denial! Brussels is the Nations capital. The Wallonia region has it’s parliament in Namur, so that makes Namur the capital of Wallonia. Likewise Flandria also has a capital and that’s Brussels because the Flemish parliament sits there. It’s also the largest traditional Flemish City with a majority of it’s residents speaking French, but who are not actually Walloons like exist in Wallonia.

  143. Pipelmel / Jun 13 2013 7:23 am

Fries: bullshit. Chocolate: bullshit. Waffles: bullshit. Truth is they brew the best beers in the world. By far. That’s enough for me to forget all the rest. At least after the 3rd Westmalle triple I usually do.

  144. stef / Jun 18 2013 8:17 am

I’m just back from my 10th(?) time to Brussels and once again got a great experience.

What I love about Belgium are the Belgians.

I’m Italian, live in Paris, I’ve lived abroad and traveled to over 40 countries in my life. I love the light-hearted atmosphere you breath in Belgium: not only Brussels, but Gent, Leuven and Liege. Everywhere I’ve found nice, open-minded and helpful people. And I’ve never been offered so many beers as in Belgium, going around gay bars and discos 🙂

My only issue is the weather, but when the sun shines, Belgium is the place to be !

    • richard / Jul 1 2013 2:43 am

  146. iggi / Jun 28 2013 6:08 pm

Back then, as a Chinese-German Erasmus M.Sc. Student in Brussels I was hoping to spend a happy study year at the ULB but was greatly disappointed. La “chimie de l’environnement” was good but most Belgians are unfriendly and very racist towards me; although I also fluently speak their two-languages: het nederlands und le français. History wise I first felt sorry about their past „language war“ and I just wanted to be good with both sides, but NO acceptance, whatsoever and you would feel it if you were in my situation: sigh. Now I saw the country and that is enough! Do I want to go there again? Most probably not!

  147. Mill / Jun 29 2013 3:21 am

I live here, and what he writes about is absolutely true! Most of the Belgians that live here don’t really see it because they don’t know any better. Sad, funny, but true!

  148. tintin / Jun 30 2013 8:56 pm

Belgium is the worst country I have been anywhere. I moved here for the experience and now I am wondering how long I can last in this shit hole.

Everything in Belgium is complicated and inconvenient. Paperwork everywhere. For everything you need a fucking piece of paper stamped by some loser in an office only open a few hours a day and closed during lunch.

Stores close a weird hours. It is one of the dirtiest cities anywhere because no one gives a shit. The typical Belgian attitude is that I will do whatever the hell suits me and fuck the rest of the world. People park wherever they want, put garbage wherever they want, drive however they want. Most places only take cash or if you are lucky, only this Proton bullshit cards.

Add to that numerous and random street closing, and a Police that doesnt give a shit and you got the worst country in Europe. Even Belgians themselves hate each other.

  149. Iain / Jul 26 2013 10:08 am

Wow, you are a completely ignorant peice of shit. Belgium is a beautiful country, with a rich history and is a proud and worthy member of our great western civilisation. Many cities in Belgium were extremely wealthy in the past, and thier merchants built beautiful storehouses, canals and residences still visible today. The many ancient monasteries which still carry on life in a very traditional way are charming and also very fascinating. “Belgium is a constitutional, popular monarchy and a federal parliamentary democracy” (From Wikipedia – a far more worthy source than your shitty ass website) Which in other words means, it HAS a government you fucking moron! Anyone who has even the remotest interest in history, would be very happy to visit Belgium..I’m guessing your ignorant brain, inside your thick skull has no comprehension of this sort of thing. Well my friend, just because you are to simple to appreciate these things, doesn’t mean the rest of us are. By the way, who the fuck cares what Collin fucking Farell thinks! He is a retard and a horrible actor, and he looks like he is inbred. He also comes from Ireland, and I’m not sure what makes Ireland so much fucking greater than Belgium. Jeremy Clarkson is also an ignorant moron who knows nothing about the world but cars. Top Gear clearly only took the comments from Belgians that suited them to support thier ignorance. I verymuch doubt they canvassed the whole country. I couldn’t care less what a fucking idiot like Jeremy Clarkson thinks. Next time you quote people to support your dumb fucking arguments, don’t use retards, because it hurts your case. Many cities around the world have strange origins for thier names. The Belgians were also present to fight at the battle of Waterloo and were brave enough to face the Germans in both world wars(who were of course juggernauts)

    • Iain / Jul 26 2013 10:35 am

I would love to put you in the position of a Belgian Soldier on the hour which saw the Nazis invade, just to teach you some humility. As for most of the rest of the comments on here…Clearly made from equally ignorant people. Someone complained that they couldn’t make friends in Belgium after living there for a year???? Well if you can’t make friends with anyone after a year, then you are a fucking loser, end of story. So these are the same people supporting your argument. How does that make you fell fuckhead? I never have liked Australians that much. I’ve always considered them obnoxious and rather stupid, and you fit the bill very well. I am not from Belgium, but I would love to visit one day. Australia can sink to the bottom of the sea for all I care, I’d pick Belgium over your fucking country any day. There is nothing at all there for me to see, no history, no nothing. Except for extremely annoying accents. Even the native aboriginies that lived there, before England dumped it’s criminals on that shitty island, were the most boring people on Earth. I would definately go to New Zealand(Which is 1000 times more interesting) and by pass your desert altogether. I’m sure you think your smug comments are very funny, but they are not in the least bit. Trust me, you are nowhere near as clever as you think you are. All of your gay web fans are as stupid and un-funny as you aswell. I guarantee you, I am more funny, more intelligent, and more clever than you..so you lose on all fronts. Please go back to your job at the gas station and focus on that. Oh, and also go fuck yourself you asshole, auzzie fuck! Belgium can’t take a joke??? That wasn’t a joke idiot, it was just insulting

well, what qualitis you want from belgium to be a wonderful country? you want belgium on the media everyday like Afganistan or US? may be then it will be an interesting country for you. Unlike US, UK,or Asia, Belgium is far more secure- girls can walk here in the middle of the night without being raped. quality of life is much better than where you from. healthcare system is one of best in the world, not like US where millions go without health insurance, people frequently die without treatment, and not like UK where patients lie in the hospital corridor and wait for months for appointment. unlike US, UK Belgium offers high quality education almost free of cost. this country has a very old history of civilization, several belgian universities were founded long before Columbus discovered america. you wrote about brussels atomium, do you know what atoms mean? did you ever visit brugge? I am sure none of your fourteenth generation has seen or can understand the beauty of brugge. of course like many other countries belgium has problems as well. but the belgians learnt to live in a complicated system, its their quality. flemish people can speak several language, its their quality. study and visit belgium and then try to write something rather than misleading people. However its really interesting to see the huge number of comments and many of them are very informative.

  156. Diana / Aug 25 2013 2:04 am

I loved Belgium! Where else can you get lost and still have fun? Odd things – like the monuments, the goofy traffic flow, hidden shopping strips with American shops, and garbage bags next to recycling bins – made me laugh all the more. One complaint, they need to work on reducing their pollution in Brussels. It’s murder on your health.

  157. John Kirton / Aug 30 2013 9:21 pm

The article has been thrown together to wind people up and has succeeded in that in many respects. There is a lot to like about Belgium; it is well organised, the food and drink culture is very good, it multilingual and relatively safe. However scratch below the surface and it is not so pleasant. My comments are more about the Flemish than the Walloons and I speak both French and Dutch and have experience of both.

As a Brit driving here irritates the shit out of me. most drivers have no manners, precious little regard for other road users and the road designs are often of dubious quality. Having a good enough job to get a ‘dikke auto’ is buried deep into the psyche. Yeah the guys, and sorry to say it gals too, driving along far too close behind you on the motorway are generally dealing with small dicks and unsatisfying sex lives. Such aggression tells me that a lot of them are getting it once or twice a month at best.

I also don’t think that Belgians are clever enough to realise that very often letting people in front of you costs you little benefits them a lot and gets the whole system moving quicker or maybe they’ve studied game theory and the like at some stage. Whatever the reason I don’t like it.

Service in shops and restaurants is pedestrian and for the most part disinterested. The Dutch and the Brits are far, far better.

The education system is highly regarded, but overrated in my view. There is too much material and far too little emphasis in helping people to learn to think. The system is very closed and lacks flexibility. If ‘thinking outside the box’ were an Olympic sport the Belgians would have less success than they’ve had in swimming. That said I can’t help being impressed by most of the tradesman and I’d trust the technical skills of healthcare professionals far more than most equivalent Western countries.

The women here. They seem obsessed with cleaning and so many of them have given up on trying to make the most of their looks that it is rather sad. Maybe they are just to tired to bother and maybe some of that explains the aggression on the roads.

Making friends here is difficult. People are generally not ‘gastvrij’ and content to live in their own little circles. They aren’t that interested in others and I find it sad that avoiding eye contact with strangers is widespread. I was talking to a Dutch woman who had moved over the border more than 20 years before and she said that she had made no real friends here and would moved back like a shot if anything happened to her husband. She was a very pleasant woman. I enjoy my holidays more than ever now and it is not always because the weather is warm. The English, Italians, French and Dutch are all much warmer than your average Flemish person and so are the Walloons for that matter.

So if you’re struggling in that respect it isn’t all down to you, though I fear that if you live here long enough, you’ll most likely be less able to help yourself. I’ll be moving south at some stage soon. Voting with your feet as they say back in England.

In the meantime any advice welcome, particularly from the Flemish

John – reading your comments is rather like looking in a mirror!

I’m a fellow Brit and have lived in Belgium (both in french and flemish speaking, non-expat areas) for the last 20 years.
You point out many of the benefits Belgium has to offer and I’d go along with most of them, but (sadly) your appraisal of the, mostly Flemish, social ineptitudes is quite spot-on.

Driving in Belgium is much like driving in Portugal or Italy, the difference being that even in the chaos of those southern countries some form of common sense and humanity does prevail. Not so on the roads here. It is ‘ieder voor zich’ (each man for himself) over here and this is also reflected in the attitude to strangers.

Unless you are a world-class charmer it is practically impossible to talk to – or interact with any one or any group that you don’t already belong to.
It’s a shame because the people here ARE actually friendly and well-meaning, it’s just that culturally there is an almighty barrier between people that are not from the same immediate cirlce of acquiantances.

The service issue is the same as in France I’m afraid, this is again a cultural issue… ‘just be pleased that you get anything at all’ is the common stance in most shops and across the service industry over here :- ) It’s basically down to a lack of training – often there is NO service training at all in Belgium for personnel in shops & restaurants… to Anglo-Saxon people especially, this is very confusing as good service is the basis of most business in England or the USA.

Thinking outside the box & doing well in sports is generally not admired as much as in other cultures, hence it will never become part of the national curriculum. Although that is starting to change with some very forward-thinking scientific companies starting to grow here, but funding & respect for sportsmen is very low.

I think your comments about Belgian women are a bit harsh, I find them very appealing generally!
Well, I’m married to one, so I am not going to complain here :- )

    I feel offended -_-

  159. blubublu / Oct 5 2013 11:17 pm

some parts of the articel may be true, but the writer obviously overreacted… sure most people dont know the national anthem , but so what? the statues are “different” but so are Belgian people. Why visit Belgium when u have all those other countries around it? Because germans barely smile, dutch people are afraid of spending money and french people only think about themselves… Belgians are au contraire to all of those people…
I lived here for a long time but I’m not Belgian, the education system is great, there might be “a lack of gouverment ” but everything they do is for the better of the Belgians
conclusion: its not as shitty as it sounds

  160. Jessica / Oct 13 2013 6:37 am

    Wow you are dumb..
I am currently living in the USA and have been for the last 3 years and can honestly say that Belgium is not the most boring place to live. It is far more exciting and intelligent than this backwards village in Arizona where I live now. So yes I will soon move back since I am only here for business. And HAPPY to move back.. People like you should just never travel and stay in your home town of wherever it is..

I LOVE Belgium!! This article made me laugh. Laughing is good. Belgium does need some governmental structure though and definitely more Local Council Authorities to stop people building any more hideous houses!! Google that! Belgium’s ugliest houses! haha. I repeat, I LOVE BELGIUM 🙂

This is one great article, the humor is amazing and the content is so true!

  163. J.J / Oct 30 2013 9:58 pm

Settle down people, this is typical English-speaking ‘tongue in cheek’… DUS MET EEN KORRELTJE ZOUT TE NEMEN !

Having lived in Belgium for 22 years – gone to school here, integrated and even married one(!) – I have to say I’m not at all surprised by the reactions. In my experience most Belgians (not all, mind you) are notoriously touchy (lange tenen:-) and do not have a decent grasp of irony. This is not a criticism per sé, merely a cultural observation.

The guy who wrote this clearly does like Belgium and is just having a bit of a laugh at the curiosities he’s observed… even if he hasn’t managed to get all his facts straight.
Don’t worry – any foreigner who’s been here knows it’s a country with many great aspects – safe good standard of living, with decent food, the best selection of beers in the world, superb social security/health systems and plenty of old-fashioned charm! Belgians are also – contrary to what many people think & despite their lack of irony or open-mindedness – quite flexible and will in most cases do their best to accomodate strangers if they can.

It is pointless to try to ‘define’ the Belgians because attitudes are more varied amoungst the locals in Belgium than anywhere else I’ve been – the teenagers & 20somethings in the larger towns are probably amoungst the most open-minded, rounded & well spoken youngsters in the EU, but go anywhere further than 5km outside of a major town and you will find yourself back in the 1970’s with regard to attitudes on race, politics and sexual liberation.

You have to approach and handle Belgians in what I can only describe as an ‘ indirect & old-fashioned ‘ way – be charming, quiet & beat around the bush as much as possible and you should find them to be pleasant and friendly, even to strangers. This is why they can’t stand the Dutch because they posess none of the previously mentioned characteristics :- )
They wil keep their distance and generally go about their own business BUT if you ask them for something or are in need of smth they will help you. This is not always the case in for example France or the UK…

They KNOW that they are a small country and can generally laugh at themselves quite well, but DO NOT RUB THEIR FACES in the country’s faults – this will not engratiate you to the local population (but be honest, where would it?? Apart from the UK perhaps, where foreign comedians are lauded for their perceptiveness once they start taking the piss out of their island and it’s people’s illusions of a long-lost Empire).

    But :

Belgians, as the insiders here, have to learn to understand the ‘outsiders’ experience as well. Yes, Belgium is nice and definitely has it’s charms, – but it is true that while the individual PEOPLE are generally nice if you know how to behave, the country from a social / political / practical persective is seriously dysfunctional to anyone who comes into it from the outside.

Infrastructure is generally weak in realation to the high taxes (public sports & toilet facilities are basically non-existent and the public transportation system is poorly connected) because the pseudo-politicians who govern seem far more interested in arguing about the Flemish><Walloon issue than actually getting anything constructive done. This isn't helped by the fact that far too much money is spent & wasted on the extra bureaucracy created by all the tiny extra government instances.
Belgium would probably work better WITHOUT a government to delay everything (see the record it set after the last election…) and it would sure as hell save a truckload of money :- )
The attitudes & lack of basic ability of drivers in Belgium are a nightmare compared to most other European countries, only in Greece and Southern Italy have I felt less safe trying to get from A to B. Indicating is non-existent and driving after more than two small beers / one glass wine is seen as quite acceptable, as long as you manage not to get caught by one of the few, very visible, police checks.

As a foreigner you have to be pretty good with people or you may quickly find yourself isolated from social activities – the warm curiosity for unfamiliar people you find in the UK and Southern-Europe is not something widely encountered in Belgium… but to be fair this is a very Germanic/Gallic issue and you won't find it much easier to integrate in Germany or northern France for that matter.

Basically Belgium is a bit like a very tricky, rather illogical computer – you will need time and plenty of trial & error to work out what makes it work for you and what you mustn't do, but once you get to grips with it's complete lack of common-sense and know how to use it you wil get along just fine :- D

its a piece of shit country. you dont wanna come down here. i wish i could live somewhere else, california or canada. belgium is really the asshole of the world. the people are racist, the belgian women are all prudes and peasants. and then there is they muzzie scum who really dont offer anything. me im from south-american descent and im seriously considering going back. lol. belgium? move along, nothing to see here.

    • J.J / Nov 18 2013 7:10 pm

I can see how Belgium could be frustrating for someone of South-American decent, if you’re used to passionate, extroverted people then you will have a bit of a culture shock over here, for sure.

But ‘a piece of shit country’ is taking it a bit too far.
You mention California as a far better place. But trust me, Cali’ is all hype and no real substance (with the exeception of perhaps San Fransisco). There is a small 3-4% of the population that have a great life, mainly due to privilege & being white with a fully paid college education and a guarentee of a good job thx to their family’s influence – but the majority of people there are Latin-Americans (or part Latin-American) and never get to sample any of that ‘California dream’.
Sure they have a lovely coastline and great natural wonders, but those things do not pay for your kids education & massive healthcare bills…

  166. stuckinblahgium / Dec 7 2013 3:52 am

    How funny 😀
Many of the comments left by Belgians below only PROVE exactly what the author was saying in the first place: that Belgians simply cannot agree on anything.

I have been living in this god-forsaken place for almost 20 years.
Brussels is the capitol of both Flanders and Belgium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flanders‎
    ).
Namur is the capitol of Wallonia.

Belgium is not so bad. It has great food, thousands of beers, world class chocolates, lovely cities, etc… The real problem in that country is the Belgian Mafia State aka the BMS. The BMS is killing every prospect of economic life in that poor country with their preposterous taxes and abusive fines. The BMS has an obscene amount of civil servants compared to other countries, most of them corrupted. The BMS kills thousands of businesses every year in order to sustain its existence and mostly its waste (by the way, don’t say this truth, otherwise, they will axe you: http://www.lesoir.be/356553/article/economie/2013-11-07/didier-bellens-di-rupo-est-comme-un-enfant-devant-saint-nicolas). That mafiacracy has no more than 5 governments (federal, Wallonia-Brussels federation, Wallonia, Flemish, and finally the region of Brussels capital). To match this in law-making, the BMS also has no less than 6 parliaments (federal, Flemish, French community, German speaking community, Brussels capital region and Wallonia). To sustain all this bullshit, millions of slaves work everyday in the private sector. The rate for the fines on labour is the highest in the world. Since abusing all these millions of slaves doesn’t suffice to finance the lavish lifestyles of the BMS exploiters (here’s just one for example – but the BMS has thousands of such cases: http://www.lacapitale.be/843257/article/regions/bruxelles/actualite/2013-10-25/192000-euros-par-an-pour-la-directrice-du-samusocial-le-clan-mayeur-refute, by the way, this is more than François Hollande, president of France or more than David Cameron, British PM), the BMS borrows billions of Euros every year on the markets. Propaganda is also very strong in that country and pretty successfully fools its slave population into believing that they have some sort of social protection while in fact the BMS is persistently and relentlessly sending its slave population into social oblivion through looting. The mobsters running the BMS happily lie during meetings with other world leaders about the well being of their slave population and praise their social model of enslavement and factual social annihilation.

So if you want to be enslaved and work really hard to finance the BMS, please go and work in Belgium. You will work really hard all your life there and will retire in absolute misery. But you will have this warm feeling of having dedicated your life to giving a wonderful life to thousands of state mobsters!

  170. leendert / Dec 17 2013 7:29 am

    Some things that aren’t true:
Antwerpen doesn’t come from ‘hand werpen’, it’s a myth.
Flanders and Wallonia don’t hate each other, we are more united than the USA or the UK.
Belgians can’t take a joke? We are a very humorous people, we laugh with ourself, other countries…
And last but not least, you can say we are boring, but we don’t live in a country with thousands of killed people by gun, we don’t live in a country that is against gay marriage and we live in a country that’s the center of Europe.

  171. spizam (@spizam_sam) / Dec 19 2013 5:53 am

Alright, you’re kind of right on the part of the government and the monuments (well the one you’ve mentioned anyways), but the rest is a bit generalizing in the bad sense.

french fries are our national dish because they were actually invented around the border of Belgium and France (with mayonaise more commonly). french fries doesnt mean French fries, it means french boiled or frenched (julienne). Nowadays there are a dozen types of sauces you can choose from and if you dont want your fries to be soaked in it you do like most Belgians do who know what the fryplaces are like, you ask for the sauce on the side.

Secondly if Belgium so boring why do you make a whole post about it?

Thirdly I’ll admit there are some people that would rather live somewhere else mostly due to the weather but actually do really love living in Belgium, we’re just laughing at our own pitiful country due to government problems. We get to laugh about it though because we know the culture, when it’s coming from an outsider who even tho has been in Belgium thrice it’s no wonder you get hate from it . If you insult a country dont wine about getting hate about it.

and lastly it’s only a small extremist group on each side (north and south) that hates the other, dont include everyone in that.

Even tho I’ll admit you’re right on certain things you got your facts a little wrong on others. All I can say is if a Country is weird it makes it all the more special and fun to live in.

“And that is because the Belgian educational system is among the best in the world.”

Sorry but that is a national myth that dates back to the 70’s. Belgium USED to be a great place to get an education.

    • Yvelika / Jul 8 2014 6:26 pm

I have lived in Belgium for 6 years and have witnessed stepkids going through the Belgian educational system, I have attended adult education here (to learn Dutch) and I must say that it fails. Especially for children with special needs. What I notice in Belgium is that the people are very good at convincing themselves they have the best or are performing well even when it’s quite apparent they are not. I have yet to hear of a single place where English is taught by a native. A friend of mine is attending University in Antwerp and has great difficulty understanding his English teacher because her pronounciation is so bad. If one dares to correct a Belgian who teaches English on something they have wrong they simply tell you, the English person, that you are incorrect ! Belgian has some good points but their education system is not one of them.

  184. Michel Deleers / Jan 31 2014 6:33 am

You don’t Know what Belgium is

  185. Michel Deleers / Jan 31 2014 6:46 am

Belgium is not boring, how CAN IT be boring when:
There are over 800 kinds of beers made in Belgium.
Belgians consume in average 150 liters of beer per person per year.
The world’s first beer academy opened in Herk-de-Stad, in the Belgian province of Limburg, in 1999.
Jean Neuhaus invented the pralines chocolate in Brussels in 1912.
Belgium produces 220,000 tonnes of chocolate per year. This amounts to 22 kg of chocolate per inhabitant annually, i.e. 61 grammes per day in average.
The world’s biggest chocolate selling point is Brussels National Airport.
Belgians claim to have invented chips (French fries), and indeed about all towns and villages have their own friterie/frituur (chips seller).
There are 3 main sorts of Belgian waffles : Liege waffles (the most common), Brussels waffles (bigger, lighter, rectangular, and eaten with toppings such as strawberries or ice cream), and galettes (thinner, softer, and typically eaten for breakfast, sometimes with jam – nothing to do with French galettes from Little Brittany, which are a kind of pancake).
Belgium is renowned for its bakeries. Local specialities include cramique (bread cooked with egg yolks and raisins), cougnou (a speciality from Wallonia eaten mostly in winter), gozettes (turnovers) and tarts. The most typical tarts are cherry tart, plum tart, apple tart, sugar tart, and especially rice tart (originally from Verviers, near Liege).
Belgium has one of the lowest proportion of McDonald’s restaurants per inhabitant in the developed world, with only 0.062 per 10,000 people, or 7x less than the USA, 4x less than Japan, and twice less than France or Germany.
This last point being the expression of a Belgians as the most developed population in the world

    • Margerynoneck / Feb 25 2014 8:50 pm

Belgium is the only country in which I have had bad service in a McDonalds.

  186. Santéï / Feb 2 2014 1:28 am

Funny article, but a bit strange. It is as if I would summarise the US as being full of weapon -addicts, eating oysters with ketchup and having strange monuments like teh Gateway Arch, a big spaghetti where you can walk under…

An example : you say there is no national sport. Although I’m no soccer fan, it’s a fact that the Belgian soccer association amounts to 400.000 members, which is in proportion more than people playing organised baseball in the US. This being said, the real national sport is fiscal fraud, what understandable is as Belgium has the highest income tax of the OECD countries.

No government ? This would matter in a Westminster democracy like OZ and US, but less in the Belgian consensual democracy where many things are agreed between the “social parties” (labour unions, employers, …) without the governement being needed, unless on last resort.

And people are really good people (except the bad ones, just like in your country).

So don’t get confused by the apparences (see The Treachery of Images) when thinking about the country of the father of the Big Bang’s principle or the Higgs/Englert boson.

  192. Margerynoneck / Feb 25 2014 8:46 pm

I married a lovely Belgian man and have lived here for 5 years. I am English.

    Good things are:

The beer of course, none better.
    Chocolate
    Public Transport
    Some beautiful towns, buildings etc
    All the music festivals.
    Public libraries

    Bad things:

    The people are very unfriendly.
The plumbing and toilets are disgraceful, streets smell of sewage especially in summer and no public toilets.
The government and the mean and nasty gemeentes (local councils) who intentionally like to make life difficult unless you are turkish, moroccan etc then they will bend over backwards.
Ignoral of brussels dictates that other european countries get taken to court for not observing
    Ridiculous amount red tape.
Speaking English to me the second they realise i’m English and i’m trying to learn Dutch.
Narcissism and ‘we are superior’ ‘fuck you’ attitude.
General pervasive rudeness, especially in shops.
    Bad and dangerous driving.
    High taxes
Standard of schooling is rather lacking yet they convince themselves its wonderful.
The internet, the availability of providers, cost of phones and the lack of much ‘stuff’ on the internet here.
Doctors do not listen during consultations and just decide what you have in a few seconds and out comes the precription pad. All is cured with drugs it seems. Hospital doctors and staff are on the whole very rude, curt and unsympathetic.
TV is appalling, celebrity obsessed and low quality. Full sex at 10am? sure! Swearing, drugs ? sure!
No attempt at all to filter these programs for later night viewing. oh and kids tv programs at midnight? Glad I don’t have kids here.

There would probably be a lot more. On the whole I have found my life in Belgium to be miserable and difficult. It may be because of the area I live or situations beyond my control. And don’t worry you Belgians that are offended by my dislike of your country, i’m planning my escape route and i’m taking my Belgian hubby with me :-P.

Great beer, Affligem<33333, Beautiful music (Lasgo and Milk Inc.) and the culture is so rich that people take advantage of it, so why don't you? Be a proud Belgian and use your smarts to prove the rest wrong! Also, your language rocks! I like it! P.S. this is someone coming from Miami, where the city is awesome, but some people make it disgusting!

  195. Crolyn_26 / Mar 31 2014 4:18 am

    Who believes this?
You could write a similar article about America.
If you want to see weird things going on, you don’t have to look at Belgium. Look at the weird things happening in your area and stop inventing stupid stuff about things you don’t know anything about. Thank you!

  196. Frequent_visitor / Apr 4 2014 12:03 am

There is some truth in the article. However #1 reason why Belgium seems boring to the British is that.. it reminds them home. Yes, Belgium streets look British (which is not necessarily a good thing). Belgium girls look British (even worse). Even the weather is identical (no comment).

Luckily the beer is much better in Belgium.

  197. Kevin Planckaert / May 9 2014 12:24 am

Proud to be Belgian. Maybe you should check our music history? (New Beat, EBM, …) Our festivals? Every town has it’s own festival. Check out city festivals like Lokerse Feesten, Gentse Feesten, Suikerrock, Brussels Summer Festival. We also have the Best Techno Club in the World en some of the greatest concert Halls.

  198. Lene / May 11 2014 7:30 pm

If this was meant to be funny, it’s not.
    1. Flemish and Dutch is not the same thing. It’s almost another language. Like russian and servian are alike but not the same. Different words, different pronunciation.
    2. The Frenchtalking people are called Walloonian.
    3. We don’t hate the Germanspeaking people, there are so few of them that we barely think about them.
    4. We don’t hate each other and we don’t hate Belgium. We have one of the greatest systems in the world, everything is possible and when you fall I’ll there will be taken care of you.
    5. Everyone likes fries. Everyone.
    6. Great education system
    7. yes, we have silly monuments, but every monument has a story and we have a great history and great art. Bruges is like an open air museum, Ghent is very authentic and Brussels is a multicultural mix of modern and ancient, with great shopping places and great people, where everyone is bilingual and doesn’t fuzz about ‘oh no they speak french, I hate them’
    8. You’re an asshole and need to get your facts straight. things go wrong and our politicians are shitty and the public transport sucks, but whatever. At least you can say what you want, even on tv, without being leashed for the whole world.

  199. Margg / May 16 2014 4:02 am

Ever been in Belgium? Because it doesn’t sound like it. You’re just a retard who thinks he’s funny and knows it all. You’re making Belgium look stupid, but seriously, you’re the one that’s stupid. How many languages do you speak? The monuments you showed are not the only ones, in every country there’s such a peeing monument, so shut up about those. The government is not the people’s. Belgium has a lot of great history,

    Pleas die.

I’ve long suggested that people seeking to gett a good understanding of this speciific topic spread their research acrooss many blogs ddfdegcdkekc

  201. Vincent / May 28 2014 7:11 am

This is pretty ignorant if you come to think of it that Belgium was once the center of the European economy. Also, the problem isn’t the difference in language, but the french pride. The Walloons thought that the Flemish were just hillbilly’s. At one point the flemish tried to take ultimate power, but the Walloons are still desperately clinging to it. NVA wants to split Belgium to weaken and impoverish the Walloons, because they depend on Flemish money. Like Bart De Wever would say “Bellum ita suscipiatur, ut nihil aliud nisi pax quaesita videatur”

  202. Manon / May 29 2014 5:53 pm

Waw.. I’ve never seen such idiot things in my whole life..
I’m Belgian and I live there since many many many years.
Belgium isn’t annoying at all, the fact is that foreigners don’t know where to go.
Have you ever been to Namur ? To Durbuy (the smallest village in Europe) ? To Gand ?
    Those are beautiful landscapes.
For example, Belgium is also known in Europe for being the most exciting country for festivals like Tomorrowland, Esperanza, Summer Festival, Rock Werchter and so on !
And then.. What the hell is that ? “Shit yourself rich” ? Common ! Are you stupid or.. ? I don’t even know this stupid game.. Okay it really hurts me that you may think that we are like farmers and ignorant people for you.
Then, you CAN’T say that there is nothing to see or interesting in Belgium.
Each country has its history and has the right to be respected.
Who are you to be so disrespectful towards Belgians ?

    Haha you’re really ignorant.
I still have a lot of things to say but I’m just tired of trying to prove you that you’re wrong.
Because you’ll probably never see this, because you don’t give a shit about your acts.
You just like saying bad and false things but you don’t care about your words.
    That’s what do immature people.

P.S : We HAVE sence of humor but.. Don’t be ridiculous, we don’t like to be offended and that people say false things about us and our country.
    Have a nice day.

I am not Belgian but do reside in Belgium. I understand what you have wrote although you do not possess the wit, humor or intelligenence to carry off what you thought would be an amusing article/blog.
I have heard and read Jermey Clarkson make many comments/jokes about Belgium( which I and some of my Belgium friends love) and he does it with wit and humour and above all intelligence. Maybe you should do stand up and get first hand reviews of how unfunny you really are…

  207. Bill / Jul 22 2014 8:47 am

Ah Belgium: what a country indeed man!

A land not really existing because their rich heritage in neighbouring countries and even all over the world? Forgotten by the most? No problem, but that’s their ignorance to laugh at 
Many people do not understand, and we can’t blame them. You have to have some historical insights or maybe live here yourself to appreciate a certain Belgian way.
No childish facts needed about the bigger the better the harder. Just the good live, no need for more. Please stay away if you can’t appreciate and looking for giant statues, has been done before but passed that stage, can you see the humour of Manneke Pis now ???? Feel free to come and be nice 
Belgians can put themselves into perspective between all those other chauvinist countries around them. What a strange country indeed.

  208. Dujardin / Jul 29 2014 2:11 am

If you don’t like Belgium it’s only because you have never met or hanged out with belgians, or not the good one at least. We may be a strange country, but we are proud to be belgian ! I may not like it for some reasons (weather, politics…) but I wouldn’t change my homeland for anything. Belgium is the only country where you can go alone to a bar and have got 20 friends one hour later… We are not boring, and if we are with you it’s only becaus of you (maybe the writter doesn’t like belgium because he is an asshole himself, why would we be kind with people like this ?!). Who cares our famous monument is a little guy peeing ? I find that funny so deal with it, Belgium is, believe it or not, one of the best country in the world, but not for his history, his monuments, his weather or his politics, but for his way of life and for his people. Try to get to know them and I promise you will be moving in with us !

  223. Monika / Oct 17 2014 8:58 am

Jeeesus, these Belgians! they can not reply anything else just the same cliches all over again – but we have good beer, chocolate, festivals, social system… we are nice, because we think we are nice, and if WE think so then it must be true and without question. I agree with Esn – I spent 5 years in Flanders and the experience was traumatic! I never met such a narrow-minded, arrogant, materialistic, greedy egomaniacs like the belgians are. I lived in different countries, travelled the world, speak myself many languages , but nowhere in the world are people so nasty and so convinced about their perfection like the belgians. they grow up listening to the constant propaganda of how great everything is and they believe it withour questioning. if you point out to them some unpleasant facts or awful personal experiences their react like teenagers – but we have fries, tomorrowland, good tennis players…really?? sorry, but its not enough for us to like your behaviour. such a list can be made for any country, its not an excuse for your extreme xenophobia and arrogance. of course there are some nice people, but based on my experience, most of the flemish are driven by interest and gried, they are extremely materialistic, shallow and empty inside. things like personal development, spirituality, cultural interest mean nothing to them. they have it perfect and they are perfect so why would they bother learning about themselves, others or even wanting to strive for a spiritual development and mind-broadening? they seem to be nice on the surface, somebody visiting the country for only few days will not realise what they are really like. it takes years to understand the motivation and mind-set. biggest egomaniacs and most superficial people i ever met. personal experience based on life in many countries. dot.

    • J.J / Oct 28 2014 2:50 am

      @Monika,

You seem genuinely hurt by some unpleasant experiences with the Flemish, and although I’m managing ok as an expat (the fact that I married into a very warm and open-minded Belgian family does help greatly of course) I know quite a few non-Belgians living here who share your experiences & opinions.

Materialism & social snobbery is a big issue, especially amongst the well-off Belgians, and I’m afraid it is true that they can’t take criticism – I think that’s one of the reasons why things take so long to improve or get fixed in Belgium- simply because people and institutions just don’t ever look in the mirror – they are not very self-aware and don’t want to face the truth.

Most public services need a drastic overhaul and there are WAY too many civil servants (ambtenaren…) who use up all the countries money and resources.

The “Why change it – we’ve always done things like this?” attitude is a big problem for the nation as a whole. It stops any kind of improvement, anywhere.

There are lots of nice things about the country, but the problem is that lots of these nice things are often ruined for non-Belgians who live here by the insular attitude towards anything that is not familiar. If a Belgian doesn’t know/recognize something he will, generally, not go near it 

In all honesty my Belgian wife (who has also lived abroad part of her life) finds these same things annoying about her country / countrymen. If Belgians would not be so touchy (‘LANGE TENEN’, ANYONE??) and be a bit more open to constructive criticism / change then it would be fantastic.

    • Kawai29asd / Jan 10 2016 11:04 pm

I agree with you Monika ! i have stayed with quite a few Flemish and jeeeez they are OBSESSED WITH MONEY ! like something is really wrong with your basic values if you bring money into every fckin conversation. Not to mention these guys were so horny and tried sleeping with random girls inspite of having girlfriends for 7 years ! so desperate after drinking 3 beers that they would sleep with any girl around…and they said its considered Normal in their culture !!! wtf mate
the most pathetic incident was when this one guy we were friends with asked me “Who is the richest one out of 3 of my friends ” i hope not all flemish are like that but in general always talk about money and how good they are at stuff…..so superficial…its beyond beleivable. hope you think a bit more about better things other than money in life because it only brings temporary joy !

pffff the author seems to have a serious stick up his butt. I mean, his site is called ‘pet hates’. He basically writes about things he hates all the time? Belgium is strange? Pigs can fly? what??
Honestly, revolutions with no violence and fries are pretty much the best thing there is. And if you’re not Belgian I don’t think you can quite understand how things work here. Plus, we don’t all hate each other, it’s just that people who hate something are heard more because they are louder. Things are not as bad as some ignorant outsider claims them to be, we’re all great here.
This is what Belgium has: hilarious and ironic beer, great chocolate, creative revolutions and a sense of humor (I’m sorry but no one can tell me they read about manneken pis on this page and didn’t stop for a full 10 minute laughing break). Admit it: we’re fantastic.

Not all Belgian people take this stuff seriously, But the author forgot to mention a lot of details, Like Belgium was the richest country in the world one time in History, To be honest it was because our first King had private property bigger then our country (Congo), Antwerp was center of Europe in the time of Napoleon who had good connections with Leopold. There are a lot of nice buildings still here from that period in history. Worth to come take a look for yourself.

  230. RB / Dec 4 2014 6:43 am

It’s a funny but very subjective article based on a lot of wrong clichés about Belgium, and clearly the writer has never been in Belgium because it’s full of factual errors.

One thing is right, belgians are specialists in surealistic stuff (see also our most famous arts). The division of the languages is only an issue for maybe 25% of the population, the rest does not care so much and it’s rooted in the fact that one part of Belgium used to be a (very rebellious) part France and the other part Germany during the middle ages but the population was rather etnic/cultural the same (Frankish and Saxon germanics mainly). Most belgians speak both french and flemish (a collection of strong dialects of dutch) and also english (with a strong accent) and very often also german…

And i could go on to correct this article but anyway. The most important thing i wanted to correct is that we can’t laugh at ourselfs, wich is totally wrong. We do it all the time as we know we are rather surealistic seen from outside, surrealistic is actually our middle name 😉 …

WTF man, whats your problems. Really Belgium is far more interesting them everybody thinks. Do you know Brussels is the capital of the EU. Before you judge a country go there first and see. And maybe the Belgian say that Belgium is boring but that’s because they live in it, if you not live in the country it’s far more exiting because everything is new. Just think about some things before you judge on the Belgian en their REAL country

  234. Martin / Dec 14 2014 10:53 pm

Hey i’m Belgian, and i need to correct this article… Manneken pis isn’t the symbol of Brussels, it is the symbol of Geraertsbergen, a small town along the language frontier in Oost-Vlaanderen. It was offered to Brussels after the war, and manneken piss is a monument that is supposed to thank all the little boys from Geraertsbergen that would come piss in a bowl for local clothe makers, because piss helped them fix colors on the tissues. And btw, Belgium is great, and Belgian people know how to party!

  235. Horst Hinselhans / Dec 16 2014 2:54 am

One should add that the Wikipedia article on the “Atomium” (that strange building) has been edited to remove the only picture of the building, appearently because Belgium thinks it holds “Copyright” over that building and that it is illegal to spread photos of it.

See, Belgium sucks even more than you thought.

    • Vnze / Jan 6 2015 1:52 am

What has a whole country to do with one retarded owner of a building? (guess what, it’s not the state).

Given your name I suspect you’re German. So your country is still full of Nazi’s because you had some of those earlier?

      Retard

  236. ANoN / Jan 19 2015 11:25 pm

  237. joe / Jan 22 2015 9:29 pm

I just moved away from Belgium and I am not regretting a bit of it. Belgium sucks. There is little choice in the supermarkets, Brussels is a dirty city. It is boring, and the people keep to themselves. The traffic is horrific. the shopping hours are joke, the shops, banks, post offices and office buildings are closed for lunch, the Wallonians hate the Flemish so nothing gets done, the taxes are outrageous and you get nothing back as far as services are concerned. The weather sucks, it rains most of the winter and that makes for accidents. It is full of bad drivers. Internet access is hilarious…. it is the first country I know where you are only allowed a limited bandwidth per month !!!.

Fuck Belgium, not only is it the strangest country in the EU, but also the most bureaucratic and all around fucked up country.

    • Chris' by the Sea / Mar 15 2015 9:29 pm

OK, at some points you have it right, but not on the shop hours. Why should normal shops and postoffices be open from the early morning almost to midnight. People who are running this shops also have a life and a family as you have, they deserve it too. Get your groceries at a decent hour as I do.
There are also nightshops in Brussels! Open all night, did you sleep and never noticed?

      • joe blow / Mar 20 2015 6:20 pm

A typically retarded Belgian answer. The point about shopping hours was stated as thus

” the shopping hours are joke, the shops, banks, post offices and office buildings are closed for lunch”

In most countries the shops are open through lunch because it is convenient for people to do the things that are necessary at that time. That’s is the point of people taking early or late lunch so there is always someone available.

An oh, about the night shops in Brussels ? Yeah all they have is alcohol and cigarettes, potato chips and candies. Some do have a limited supply of groceries, but they are very limited and hugely overpriced. And don’t get me started on the availability of fresh milk…

In most big cities outside Belgium there REAL groceries stores often open all night, especially on the center of the capital city.

  238. Brian / Feb 17 2015 8:25 am

  240. rosie vancampenhout / Mar 19 2015 11:41 am

Belgium has a lot more to offer than fries and chocolates. Comparing to the U.S we have a lot of historic cities, like Gent, Antwerp, Mechelen. Ofcourse we are a little country, but that’s the beauty of it. The problem is that other countries only know the cliché’s. And ofcourse we are too modest.
The most of us speaks three languages, I think that’s an advantage. And that we can’t laugh with ourselves, that is so untrue. We ‘ve got a lot of stand up comedians up here. In fact ones a year there is a show on new yearsday with Geert Hoste. He laughs about the political things and the royals in Belgium over the past year.

During the summer we have got the best festivals of the world. In fact, Werchter has chosen a few times for the best musicfestival of the world.

And there is a lot of good music here. For example Stromae, Gabriel Rios, dEUS etc etc. The world makes fun of us, but do they now Belgium that good?

    • joe blow / Mar 20 2015 6:32 pm

You need to visit Wallonia a bit more, where people are a bunch of country bumpkins who can barely speak proper French, where all the TV programs and movies are dubbed in French, and where the people don’t give a shit about learning any other language, let alone Dutch.

I lived there so I know… Ghent is as good as it gets. Ever been to Charleroi, or Liege ?

The little country is another Belgian myth. There are smaller countries in with far less people that are much more successful and organized in every way, not to mention Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Switzerland, Luxembourg… etc.

    • Max / Apr 8 2015 12:19 pm

Belgium does feel like a huge disappointment having lived here some years. There is a reason the suicide rate is so high and most european politicians flee back to their country on thursday after their work is done. but thinking about the childlabour associated with belgian chocolate alone pisses me off together with the 10 million Congolese killed, they make Hitler seem honest. Roads are bad, food crap NEVER MET A FOREIGNER THAT LIKED Belgium. In summary:

After you’ve seen belgium and all it lacked your conscious will prevent you from going back.

    • merewynne / Apr 8 2015 7:29 pm

      @eviken:
WTF?! We want Belgium off the map! How dare you Belgians not accept criticism about such a lame excuse for a “country”. You’ve been making me fucking mad for 19 years. I finally got out and Belgium still won’t release its fiscal hold on me! Go the fuck away!! ALL OF YOU!!!

married with a belgian and living in liege and wish I was somewhere else. I really dislike Belgians and their country. I’ve not found anybody who loves life less, and thinks they’re gods on the road, whilst trying to kill each other. I wish they’d spend more time learning to drive than drink beer. Their governments are a joke, and the Wallonian government corrupt ( where did road repairs, road design, town planning, immigrant integration go to). Sexist and discriminative beggers belief even with government discourse.

An International Helsinki Association report issued in 2007 complained about the “use of racist and xenophobic arguments in political discourse” in Belgium, noting that in April 2006, “the leader of the Front National Party and member of the Brussels Regional Parliament Daniel Féret, was sentenced to 250 hours of community service because of incitement to racial hatred. He was also barred from running for political office for ten years.”
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights_in_Belgium#Minority_rights

“A 2008 report by the UN’s Committee on Discrimination against Women called on Belgium to ensure that women receive equal pay and equal access to jobs. It further recommended that Belgium “take the steps necessary to increase the percentage of women occupying leadership positions in all sectors of the society and to make regular assessments of the effectiveness of those steps.” The report asked for new legislation that would allow women to pass on their last names to their children, which they are not permitted to do under current Belgian law, and also requested that sexual abuse, which under Belgian law is considered a moral offense, be reclassified as a crime of violence.”
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights_in_Belgium#Women.27s_rights

A Council of Europe report issued in 2005 expressed concern about “the lack of fundamental safeguards” in Belgium “against ill-treatment in police custody.” It was recommended that Belgium adopt legislation to improve the situation, “especially to ensure the detainees’ right of access to a lawyer.”[16] The Council of Europe has also complained about the “excessive length” of certain judicial proceedings in Belgium.

Germans are the most disgusting racist people on earth. The security guards do routine checks and of course only people of colour are stopped. such filthy racists disgusting security guards.. fuck them and all their families, their mothers, sisters and wives.., I fuck them all in their mouths, pussies, asses..

  249. Jordy / May 13 2015 7:05 am

Chips are delicious with mayonnaise, yes they put a lot of it on them but it’s really good. Even though the combination mussels and chips may sound weird, they’re really delicious together and might be one of the best dishes in existence. I don’t know what the author’s problem is, but I can’t remember Brits being original for their dishes. I don’t have anything against them but he starts complaining about our dishes but eating chips with a piece of fish and vinegar on it, that sounds really disgusting for us. That you find things weird from a culture, or country, or what ever, OK. But that doesn’t mean you have to spread your hate about that country.

  250. Blue19 / May 28 2015 8:04 am

The most boring place on Earth, a buffer zone rather than a country, terrible food, horrible weather, ugly women and I could go on like this forever. As John Stewart put it, Hitler’s highway to France. If you are nearby, don’t waste your time, go to Amsterdam, Paris, London,….anywhere but here!

    • Flo / Nov 19 2015 8:31 am

Belgium is actually a pretty cool country if you’re interested in culture 😉 Guess not.

  251. FlemishGirl / Jun 10 2015 11:28 pm

I’m not going to say it was a good resume of my country, Belgium. But if that’s your opinion, then you have the right to have this opinion. Although, I would recommend some research first. Brussels is indeed flemish and french speaking, but the surroundings is flemish speaking. We only have one capital, which is Brussels. Antwerp and others mentioned are big cities, but that’s all.
Dutch and Flemish are two different languages. And you know why? Dutch people don’t understand us and we don’t understand them 😉
Apparently some think we have ugly women? Well, that’s very objective of you 😉 The rest of the world are all models, right?
There were other things you mentioned which are wrong, but I am not going to list them all.
Maybe Wikipedia isn’t a good source after all 😉
To end my opinion, I’d like to say that Belgium is nice to visit but only for a couple of days.
Like do Wallonia for 2 days, Flanders for 2 days, Brussels one day and maybe if you like the coast.
Certainly try our delish food: Waffles, Fries with mayo or without (who cares), chocolate (Neuhaus), beers, mosselen, … You won’t starve :p

  252. Giebels2609 / Jun 26 2015 6:17 am

Seriously, a little bit of hating is ok, but that,…

I mean comon, I live in Belgium and 90 % of the Stuff you wrote is complete garbage.

So next time be a little more friendly.

  253. Namir / Jun 26 2015 10:07 am

Indeed. Belgium is not the strangest country, it is just pathetic and retarded. People are retarded, and this can be seen in their xenophobic and countryside redneck behavior. The fact that they have horrible fitness (the walk in very awkward ways) and that they ALL have the same surnames, show that inbreeding is very common in Belgium.

But this problem is not only biological, culturally they are extremely xenophobic and racist because they have been invaded by nearly all European countries. So they feel always inferior to the rest of foreigners and try to do to immigrants what other countries did to them. A country that should be split and integrate to Holland and France for their own good, they are not prepared to live in their own way.

  254. Peter / Jul 6 2015 5:19 am

    What a lot of rubbish!
Belgium has great food, is far from boring with a 24/7 nightlife starting from Thursday’s onwards and most of all most of them are seriously cool and quite the trendsetters in fashion, music and the likes.
So take it back as you speak out of your backside!!

  255. mielan / Jul 13 2015 2:22 am

Our education is pretty good thought .

  256. Une fois / Jul 24 2015 7:59 am

That’s true we are strange… but boring?
Also, for those who kindly said we were racist: that’s the biggest lie I’ve ever heard. Sure, some belgians are racists but there are racists everywhere and most of the belgians are cordial.

Belgians are easy-going. We’re taking it easy.

We might be a little country with a lot of problems but we have a fucking big history. We’re not into patriotic stuff but don’t look down on us.

This article made me laugh but those comments…

    • The stupid belgian / Oct 14 2015 8:51 am

He is from Australia… And he call us racist. “Australian” are all migrants killed and genocide the real Australian d today they are proud of being nationalist. that’s a massive provocative article. Of the ppint was making humour then it’s a really boring and silly sens of humour. Of its just for complaining of his Belgium trip who didn’t go well, then its pathetic because he plays the vitcim.

  257. Jeff / Aug 11 2015 1:08 am

This article is written by a Belgium hater. I’ve traveled to Belgium a lot, and it’s a nice country. The one who wrote this must be super dumb, and doesn’t know what Belgium actually is. If you know some history, you know why Belgium exists. The building of Europe, where all the important decisions are being made, is located in Belgium. Belgium is one of the richest countries too.
I don’t know the point of this article: it must be written by someone dumb, someone who’s bored and wanted to be ‘smart’ or someone who’s jealous.
And guess why they translated it: two languages are being spoken in Brussels (Dutch and French), so duh. Some street names are really different in the two languages and even Jozef and Joseph isn’t completely the same, if you did a little bit of research, you could’ve known this, and you would’nt look so dumb as this article shows. Cheers.

I often wish I was born in England, but I hear most English people are assholes.
This article is hilarious, by the way, though I’m sure other Belgian people will disgree with me.

A part of my family was in the French restance, and my grand-father had been in jail when fighting agaisnt the German nazi, so, even if it’s humour, the sentence, “France is known for surrender to German” hurts a lot, and is total hate propaganda.

Do notice though, that if 1% of the Belgians reading this get butthurt and start ranting in the comments, you’ll hear about the 1%, but you won’t hear as much about the other 99% like me who just had a fun read!

I was there from 2012 to 2015… Have they finally removed all that shit from the Schuman metro station ? How about the N3 from Terveuren to Bertem ? Those fuckers closed that road for almost two years just to fix some 500 meters of pavement. Lazy bastards… they inconvenience everyone and the government doesn’t give a fuck

don’t worry, that is why everyone eventually leaves your piece of shit country. I laugh with all those EU expats and bureaucrats working in Brussels who don’t pay any taxes on their earnings along and don’t give a fuck about Belgium, so all you stupid Belgian fucks have to pay 50% taxes over any earnings over 23K to make up the short fall. Great deal if you ask me.

About the bemgian beers… Did you try an Orval, A Westvleteren (just won the price of the best beer in the world in I can remember wich year… too drunk sorry), a Chimay, a triple Westmeal and a Rochefort ? Or a Gulden draak ? Because my little australian friend, if you did, you will cry of joy and just never want to drink a fucking flat and warm lager after it.

Weather stuff isn’t peoples duty, its from the Nature and you can’t do nothing to change it.
National monuments are ok, some of them impressed me a lot like the Grand Place, for me they are good enough compared to countries I met before.
People are ok too, no big differences between people from another parts of North Europe, they are educated, politely and most of times will salute you with Bonjour or Dutch Good Morning so I don’t think any of you know what to talk about them…
If you wanted to make some joke no problem but I dont think people should take this some kind of “review” seriously.

    peace.

Piece of shit government, doesn’t know what to do with the terrorists. They have been breeding in Molenbeek for years. Now they threaten Belgium and the government responds by shutting down everything, like scared little shits. This is only going to cause more problems. The day after Sept. 11 the country was back in business as usual, albeit with a lot more security. Same in Paris, the security forces were out, but the country was brave and the people responded… but in Belgium, everyone runs for the exit…what a fucking joke of a country

    • J.J / Dec 8 2015 7:17 pm

Don’t be so easily offended. The whole thing “tongue in cheek” (ie. satire), obviously. Belgians need to stop taking themselves so seriously – trust me, this is not even criticism on my part, it is just some free advice.

I’ve lived here for 25yrs and married into a Belgian family. Belgians (yes both Flemish & Walloons) are of course perfectly nice people, but generally you guys need to “pull in your toes” (lange tenen…), to use one of your own sayings, and stop being so easily riled. Get off that horse ;- )

  291. Oliver / Apr 16 2016 9:05 am

What a frustrated idiot who wrote this article. It’s full of lies. Belgium is far from boring and deserves much better than this crap. It is so easy to do Belgium bashing because it’s small country but my experience with bigger countries is that the grass is not greener elsewhere. Every country has good and bad things but I’m always so happy when I get back to my very beautiful country full of medieval and historic cities, stunning architecture (nowhere in the world you find such architectural diversity), incredible food (Belgium is a gastronomic paradise), fabulous beers (+- 2000 and a few hundred commercialised), In fact Belgium has more food, architecture, arts and history per square meter than any of its neighbouring countries like France, The Netherlands and Germany, and that is a fact. Belgium is the country with the most castles per square mile in the world. There are about 3000 castles. Very impressive. Belgiumis has always pioneered in many areas such as technology, farmacy, biotech, healthcare, food procession, architecture, railways etc. Around 1900 it was among the most industrialised countries in the world etc. Belgium is not perfect but to me it is a great place to live because it offers a high quality of life. The people don’t take themselves seriously, they are friendly and open minded. Not sure if I could live elsewhere. I just love Belgium! Ignore Pet Hates and visit Belgium. It’s just great!

Disfunctional and corrupt political system, all resources spent on these 3 ridiculous communities
who speak different languages and refuse to speak any other. Look at what happened in Molenbeek,
30 years of ingorance and non-Intervention. And to top it off, it’s the only government in the world who claims their constituents can’t drive at night on a dark Highway! That’s why they are lighted.
The Belgian government is made of experts in taxing and spending. That’s a typical sign of incompetent governing.I’m definitely ashamed to be a Belgian !!!
